At his best, as with "A Prayer for Owen Meaney," "The World According to Garp," and "Widow for a Year," John Irving spins a literary tale filled with bizarre plot twists and even more bizarre characters. Though he stretches the envelope of belief, his novels deal with the human condition and how we handle the extreme as well as the mundane. At his best, Irving can take a transvestite, former all-pro tight end and show us insight into our own lives, hopes and aspirations. Unfortunately, "Until I Find You" stacks a shelf below Irving's best. Overlong and repetitive, "Until" still has enough moments to keep Irving fans amused. And his mastery of literary style and substance remains on every page. Jack Burns, a Canadian raised Hollywood actor has grown up with his mother and her stories of the dead-beat dad who deserted them before he was born. Jack sets out on a trek through Europe and North America searching for the father he has never met, and learns his mother's stories were a truth of sorts, but not the only truth. At times unusual and invigorating, and at other times tedious -- not among his best.

I have just re-read this book, it is not quite the book goodreads has; my book is an old falling apart paper back that used to belong to my parents. Published by 'Great Pan' the cover proclaims that it cost 2'6 when new. It was printed in 1961 and has no ISBN. This is a lovely book, after reading a lot of contemporary fiction with 'English' as a stereotype rather than as actual characters this book is very soothing in it's portrayal of characters. I think now that there is just a tiny twist of ironic commentary on the calm understated of the English, I never detected it there before. This book feels as though one is reading historical fiction, so much so that I nearly put it on that shelf. But this was written as a contemporary book or nearly so; the references to 'paraffin lights' lighting up London's sky, the ability to travel around the world without any 'papers' (which is to us passports)and the inability of the medical profession to determine if there is any internal damage to a person lying in a hospital bed all add up to a fascinating glimpse into a distant past that is barely a lifetime away. The story revolves around a small place in England 'Latchetts' is a small homestead that has always belonged to the Ashby family which makes it's modest living at present by breeding and training horses. Some years ago a plane crash killed the parents of the Ashby children and their aunt came to care for them until Simon, the oldest son came of age. That coming of age is a bare few weeks away, when Patrick, Simon's elder twin brother reappears. Everyone believed he had committed suicide after his parents death, but it seems the suicide note was a running away note after all. We, the readers know that Patrick is an imposter and the story at a lovely pace walks us through him coming to Latchetts and the final resolution of what really happened to Patrick Ashby all those years ago.

It was good. First time I have read this author. Apparently, I again got a book in the middle of a series but I am getting used to it. I wish I knew because a couple of the characters had a background that I didn't know that much about.

Comments: Critical Theory really was always in danger of giving birth to postmodernism, thanks to its critical and close reading of -and thus being influenced by- Heidegger and Freud. No, Foucault wasn't just wishing (dreaming) when he drew parallels between himself and the Frankfurt School. But this affinity to the likes of Heidegger and Freud came at a price; the pessimism of these two thinkers became inextricably entwined within critical theory itself. Critical Theory is the greatest, but not the only, example of left-wing pessimism in existence. Only the future can judge the almost countless ramifications of this in twentieth century leftist thought. I also have the later translation but the old book -underlined, torn - has too many notes and we have too much time spent together to simply toss it away. The 1972 edition of this book was translated by John Cumming. Not only is this later edition better translated (by Edmund Jephcott) it also has two important essays at the end of the book that help situate 'Dialectic of Enlightenment'. First, 'The Position of "Dialectic of Enlightenment" in the Development of Critical Theory' and secondly, 'The Disappearance of Class History in "Dialectic of Enlightenment".' Both need to be read by anyone interested in this classic.

Took a while to get into it. I really hate the alternate point of view of telling a story, a layer of confusion it could have done without.

this book is about a kid and his butt unexpectaly comes "to life" his butt is a fighter and zach also meets the kisser the smacker and more. i would connect this book to zombie butts by the same author and it is just the sequel to the day my butt went psycho. i would give this book 2 stars because at first it's a good story but later on it begins to get boring and some parts are entertaining.

** spoiler alert ** Confusing as hell. Just rent Apocalypse Now and pretend you read the book. Just remember to change a few details: 1) the setting is Africa, not Vietnam. 2) Kurtz is an ivory trader. He is not in the army. 3) Kurtz does not get killed; he gets sick and dies. 4) There are no puppies. That's pretty much it. Read for: 12th grade AP English

I found this to be an excellent read as it can introduce students to the Caribbean culture in a different way. Cohen takes something as routine as a young child riding on the subway with his mother and seeing a lady on the subway with a bag. This lady soon opens her bag and shows everyone on the subway different aspects of the Caribbean culture!

I found myself losing my attention for most of the book. The main character was a classic. So were most of the characters. But then the entire book went downfall, and I found myself skipping pages til the end. Maybe it was because this book was too unique. And lacked a proper plot. Which is kind of disappointing, because I loved the cover and thought I'd love the book. It's funny at most aspects. And it's kind of "green" for people who care about the environment. But it's not really for me. There are, however, people who would absolutely enjoy this book because they can connect to the cynical Jay and her life. So I wouldn't recommend it; but at least the cover's cute!
