I'm really torn about the four-star rating on this, as part of my wants to give it five, but I always round down when I'm in any doubt. I picked this up because I absolutely adored Fat Kid Rules the World, and my only letdown was in the recycled gimmick between them. Fat Kid's Troy spends a lot of time imagining headlines about himself, and Iggy spends a similar amount of time imagining the reactions of people when they realize how awesome Iggy really is. Honestly, that's the only reason for my downgrade. In all other respects, this is a gut punch picture of families, love, and who really has it worse. It touches on class differences but stays tight to Iggy's perspective, and you really do, after you get to know him, realize that Iggy's not such a bad kid after all.

Though he stretches the envelope of belief, his novels deal with the human condition and how we handle the extreme as well as the mundane. At his best, Irving can take a transvestite, former all-pro tight end and show us insight into our own lives, hopes and aspirations. Unfortunately, "Until I Find You" stacks a shelf below Irving's best. Overlong and repetitive, "Until" still has enough moments to keep Irving fans amused. And his mastery of literary style and substance remains on every page. Jack Burns, a Canadian raised Hollywood actor has grown up with his mother and her stories of the dead-beat dad who deserted them before he was born. Jack sets out on a trek through Europe and North America searching for the father he has never met, and learns his mother's stories were a truth of sorts, but not the only truth. At times unusual and invigorating, and at other times tedious -- not among his best.
