The Book Thief is not for the weak in heart. In this story, Death is a main character and he narrates as he shares stories of his human observations that involve compassion, heartache, hatred, and beauty during the Holocaust in Nazi Germany. With the workload that Death must endure during the war, he shares the stories that surround the likes of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl outside of Munich. I believe he is attracted to her story and how her gift keeps on giving to others and ultimately, herself. In my opinion, her story offers a distraction from Death’s constant experience with hate. Markus Zusak wrote with an innovative structure to this story. Death is constantly informing the reader about what is to come. Yet, as the reader, I would press on and still want to experience the ebb and flow of emotions with the characters. Perhaps, Death’s announcements of his work ahead of time take the focus off one person’s death and sustain the constant pressure and fear for all of Nazi Germany. Occasionally, Death will interject the story with his work and, for me, it served as a reminder that Death was always looming and his visits were truthfully an inconvenient interruption. The character development is outstanding. There are many colorful characters in this story. There is some language. However, I hardly found it offensive. It is ugly language in an ugly time in history. I found myself hearing how the characters would say something before I read the author’s description. That being said, the development of the characters is thorough and, consequently, I found the pace in the early part of the book to be slower. By the end, I can admit to being grateful for the details. This story continues to give me insight after I have finished the book. The thought of me personally being or becoming a “word shaker” in my community or in my family is inspiring. And though I am “haunted” by the reality of the Holocaust and the hate depicted, I am lifted up by the ordinary people that stood against the hate and offered love unconditionally.
