Started slow but got better, surprisingly. There were times I couldn't put it down but others I forgot about it. Good story though!

At first, I didn't want to read this book. But once I got past "the Dover mail," I was hooked. Is it wrong that I have great love for Carton? I mean beyond the big picture of what he does--all the way through I think I fell in love with this slob! ???? I think there is something wrong with me. (and I did not care for Lucy, but maybe that was petty jealousy. )

It's the Da Vinci Code. A great thrill ride, amongst loads of interesting historical data.

Fantastic! I never read this as a child, but it has a lot of good vocabulary in it for 3rd graders. There are so many resources online that provide great ideas on comprehension skills you might be able to help your student develop from this book.

It's no surprise I liked this book. 1.) I love authors who create real, believable, flawed characters, and 2.) I love stories of messed up families. And this family is definitely messed up, although more so on an individual character level. Each sibling has huge problems. Yet the problems are believable. We all make mistakes, we're all confused. This is a gritty novel providing an objective glimpse into the truly messed up lives of a few characters. There is no neat and happy ending, either. The book is a great capturing of life just as it is: messy, confusing, and a rollercoaster ride of surprises. I don't think there was one boring moment in this entire novel. I have recommended it to others and no one has told me they disliked it. Sometimes it's nice to laugh at other people's (character's) expense!

I think its kind of confusing to me, but it is still good and interesting!! Try it! Well, first, you have to start from the very first book, or you will really get confused, as quick, when you start the first page of the book! Unless you read the explaining part. It is really, good. Just read the first book, before you read the others. If you tell you that you are not confused even though you started at book 3, i wouldn't believe you, and i guess i would never believe you!! (Well, that you read it without confusing yourself.) Unless you are Kathryn Lasky. My Rating: 5 out of 5

** spoiler alert ** I liked the other Green Knowe books, but this is a complete departure. The writing is still good, but instead of revolving around the house and it's inhabitants from past and present, this story is about a gorilla escaping from the zoo and the ending is tragic. I could see it coming a mile away, but somehow I was compelled to keep reading even though I normally avoid books in which animals are killed. I'm sure that's because of the good writing, but I wish I had stopped. I wouldn't recommend this for children who are traumatized by the death of animals.

I don't know... lately I seem to be reading a string of books that stop short of tying up the loose ends. It's deja vu - I feel that I keep making this same complaint in my reviews. At least several other people had the same complaint about this one. I enjoyed reading it, found it disturbing and interesting, it held my attention, etc., but I felt let down at the end. I just expected there to be more.
My sister bought the first paperback edition of this book when it came out, and I read it waaaaay back then. I seem to recall that John Lennon's recent murder wasn't mentioned at all, it having happened after the book went to press. This is a very comprehensive history of The Beatles and it is chock full of trvial details every superfan craves. However, I do recall feeling that the author was making no secret of the fact that John was his favorite Beatle. In my opinion, that is the one ongoing problem that kept the book from being spectacular. I just prefer my history more unbiased. Recently I came across an updated version on a clearance shelf at the bookstore and bought it. Now it has John and George's death in it as well, and the paperback is now a larger version which makes the photos more enjoyable. It remains a comprehensive history which might be far more than a general music buff would want to tackle, but to go beyond a rehashing of basic Beatle history, read this and enjoy it!
