A fascinating look at how London has dealt with its dead through the ages, taking us from the Pagans and Romans, through the Middle Ages and the Victorians, up until modern times, and taking in numerous plagues and epidemics, a few fires and two World Wars, the death of Lady Di and the London bombings, while moving from outside the city, into its heart and then back out again. Informative, astonishing, gruesome and revealing, this book nearly managed to outdo my record of how many times I could turn to Nik with a "Listen to this!" - I think he was being bothered at least once a page (although he'd probably say it felt like more. He was trying to watch football, after all). Whether it be the charnel houses with their decorative skeletal chandeliers, the boisterous medieval graveyards and their town centre on a Saturday night atmosphere (complete with heavy drinking, fighting and regular deaths), the putrescent Victorian burial yards that actually killed the living, the drunken gravediggers, the exploding coffins and the showers of remains, the embalmed wives on display in living rooms, or the brides making 'grave clothes' for their potential future children, each page was bursting with jaw-dropping and frequently stomach-turning facts. Gladstone is quoted within: "Show me the manner in which a nation cares for its dead, and I will measure with mathematical exactness, the tender mercies of its people, their loyalty to high ideals, and their regard for the laws of the land." In that case, Arnold shows us here that we don't have an awful lot to be proud of. **Also posted at Randomly Reading and Ranting**

I thought it would be hokey when I started it, but it ended up actually being rather enlightening. I know the story of Jacob and Joseph (and, of course, Dinah) much better than I would know it otherwise.

Worst. Book. Ever. This was probably the only book I have only read in my life that is actually worse than the movie. A lot worse! I actually loved the movie, it was my favorite movie for a while. I thought if the movie was so good then the book must be good. Right? Wrong!!!! It was so awful, everything was changed from how it was in the movie and let me just say this: I am extremely grateful for the writer of this film that they did change so much. Don't read it! Unless you want to see how bad it really is or to just waste precious time that you could be reading other books that are actually worth it!

While exploring a tumultuous time in Argentinean history through the eyes of comic characters, Nathan Englander’s new novel The Ministry of Special Cases (Knopf, 2007) muses on the lengths to which loving parents will go when their child is in danger, and the lengths to which a repressive government will go to quell dissention. The novel takes place in Buenos Aires in 1976, when the troubled government of Isabel Peron was overthrown by a military junta. It was a time of extreme violence and social unrest; an estimated 20,000-30,000 leftists, students, union members and others who may or may not have been insurrectionists “disappeared” at the hands of the military dictatorship. Against the background of the government’s so-called “Dirty War” against its citizens, Englander portrays the lives of a middle class, Jewish family. Reminiscent of Nadine Gordimer’s novels, in which the political history of South Africa is seen through the lens of a single family, Englander’s novel juxtaposes the power struggles within the family – between father and son, between husband and wife, between mother and son – against the characters’ battles with political, social, and religious forces. Although tragic elements propel the plot, the novel contains comical moments as well. Kaddish faces one of the most devastating situations a parent could imagine but his story is, in many ways, a comedy of errors. Notwithstanding his good intentions, his plans always go awry, such as when a nose job he arranges for Lillian is mangled and when he bungles an attempt to blackmail a powerful woman for money to pay ransom for his son. Although Englander’s writing often depicts Jewish characters and themes, it also resonates with readers from diverse spiritual and cultural traditions, and has been compared to that of Issac Bashevis Singer, Saul Bellow, and Franz Kafka, among others. Discussing the novel in an on-line interview, Englander commented that the “greatest tragedy is also funny.” Concurrently a compelling exploration of a father’s complex relationship with his teenaged son and a critical commentary on totalitarian governments, The Ministry of Special Cases depicts the comedy and tragedy of private individuals caught in a complex political situation.

I like where this series is headed. So many twists in this, too many to count. Amazing, just wonderful.

I actually read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone...the U.K. version. A friend had purchased the first 3 books in the U.K. She traveled frequently and I picked up her mail, watered the plants, etc. On one trip I asked if I could read the 3 Harry Potter books. I was starting to hear a lot about them. From Chapter One I was hooked. I understood what all the fuss was about. I wish I were a student at Hogwarts!

I'm giving this a solid five stars because even though some of it m I vessels slowly, there are some truths and gems inside of this book that every black woman needs to know. Zora understood black men and their fragile egos. She understood Black women and their desire for love that was often confused with being a whore. She understood that the black man's "burden" was the heavy chain that the black woman had to wear if she wanted his love. She understood pure love. Young, reckless, unfiltered love. Tea Cake isn't perfect but he loves Janie and it jumps at you off the pages. Janie is... perfection. I love her character because she gets it. She gets that life is too damn short to be miserable and unloved. She gets that it's nice to be alone. I adore her.

This is a good coffee table book for anyone who enjoys looking at pictures of famous people. The photographs are great, and it was a really creative premise. Each actor is given a description of an emotion or an event ("You've just won the lottery!") and they are photographed expressing that emotion. Definitely worth examining.
