Recently finished reading this for the second time. Love Isabel Allende and highly recommend all of her books.

Not Ludlum's best, but not his worst either. Formulaic like Ludlum's other books, however this is set 30 years after the Matarese Circle, with some of the worst characteristics of Ludlum's worst novels, and only glimpses so far of his best work. Ludlum is the master of the chase and action sequences and tangled webs of anti-government conspiracies, and while this novel is chock full of the latter there sure isn't much action so far. There is just a ton of buildup, with shocking (not) revelations that are right in line with his other works.

I only want to say one thing about this book-- I thought that he had to be bullshitting about the sinterklus myth and the taking away of children in a sack. Then I met a guy from Amsterdam at a bar and sure enough, it's true. I think a tapas eating, sack weilding santa would have done a better job of keeping me in line than the cuddly american version.

Truly enjoyable! Full of wit, drama, and inspiration. Oh! Also full of great recipes (at the back of the book). The only thing that didn't work for me, at least at the beginning, was the device of the reporter writing a story about the Potluck Club. It didn't seem to hold together at the beginning. In fact, for most of the book, we're aware of the reporter character but it isn't clear that he's actually researching them for a story. Toward the end, we know and it adds to the story but in the beginning, not so. We are introduced, through a collection of stories, to a group of women who meet monthly for the purpose of praying for those in the community that need prayer. At least that's the premise of their meeting. Each woman brings an item for potluck lunch after the meeting so there is more eating, gossiping, eating, gossiping, than praying going on. Oh, did I say gossiping? The stories are wonderful. They make us want to know more about the characters and in the end, we come to understand each one and want to know more about them. Very nicely done.

I must have read this book a long time ago and forgot it, because when I started reading it, I began remembering and anticipating fragments and events in the book. I read it shortly after Year of Fog, and in all honesty found Year of Fog more believable and poignant. Maybe because in latter, I related more to the main character--a single female, not financially secure, with very little by way of family. The people and events in Deep End of the Ocean did not resonate with me in the same way. The one exception to this was Vincent, AKA Reese. His character was well-developed and compelling, and had a touch of pathos that really tugged at my heart. Other than that, a kinda "meh" book. Ending: Bittersweet, somewhat ambiguous

Mary is a mother who has recently lost her daughter. This book is her journey through her grief and trying to get past it. Knitting gets her through it. She joins a knitting group and becomes friends with this group of women ... learning all about their trials and sufferings. Somehow, this helps her to understand herself and how she can, in turn, help other people. It's the knitting that brought them all together, but it's their friendship that keeps them together. You'll want to read this book when you, yourself, are not in a down mood ... it is a little depressing through the whole book. Nobody has anything good to say until the very last chapters of the book. This was the only negative thing I found about reading this ... something cheerful or encouraging could have been added to keep my attention captured. Overall, a very thought provoking book about friendship.

Really good book from what I remember, I learned that even the best intentions can be corrupted by power. (hope I am thinking of the right book...lol)

I bought this in the early 90s, when the whole "foodie" thing had recently happened in NYC. I would read this like a novel. Love it, even though I've only cooked a tiny fraction of the recipes.
