Pearl could have been an interesting story, but the characters are too over-the-top without being amusingly quirky. They are just odd and not very likeable. I did not find anyone that was interesting enough that would make me hope another book will follow with the same characters. Pearl still would have been readable except for the multiple graphically described rapes and other violence against women. It was just sickening. I read three-quarters of the book before I decided I had read more than enough.

I found this book to be very enjoyable. I hadn't read anything like it before and found it very easy to follow. Very good read!

Would recommend: Yes The Secret of Lost Things is a lovely read. The language is evocative and really immerses the reader in the story's environments. The plot in the first three-quarters of the book was fairly slow, but Sheridan Hay kept dangling questions and hints so that I was always on the edge of my seat. And then the last section knocked me over the head. I gasped three times in 80 pages, and that is saying something. My favorite bits of the book were when Hay was musing about the lives and personalities of books, like that they have their own destinies and they form the foundation of people's characters. I just appreciated reading the sort of hallowed language about books that echoes in my head, but I don't say it aloud in case I sound like a loony to whoever is around.

Aaaaaaaah, my first glossy rectangular Garfield book! Such contentment! You weren't very cool if you didn't have one of these back in the day. Somehow, this was the only one I ever ended up getting my hands on, but I knew kids who had pretty impressive Garfield libraries. I just kept reading this one over and over again. Once you hit eighth or ninth grade and it sinks in that the world isn't a magical playland for your own personal amusement, funnies tend to mysteriously lose their funniness (though like myself you may continue to glance over them in vain for nostalgia purposes, if not much else), and sadly Garfield was no exception. He does, however, put me completely at ease, and that's more than a lot of things can do. As lame as the cartoon now seems (and let's just go ahead and pretend those movies don't exist, yes?), Garfield's shitty attitude was a much-needed tonic for the tiresome emphasis on manners and cooperation constantly being shoveled down my throat in school and church back then, and I'll happily lend my future child my own dogeared copy once he or she inevitably starts coming home with unimpressive report cards. On another note, "Garfield Rolls On" instilled in me a lifelong fear of eggs. In one of the cartoon, Jon cracks an egg, screams "Oh yuck!", and runs away. Garfield takes a blase look into the frying pan, gives the reader one of his sleepy-eyed, wry sidelong grins, and notes "It's not often you see a yolk with a beak." I loved reading this book, but I always kind of dreaded the page with that cartoon on it, although yelling "Oh yuck!" is funny.

i love miranda july. i love her way of comparing people's rumps with baked goods. i love reading one story of hers at a time and spacing it out. i am finding it harder to read many back to back as something starts to sound a bit too too. a bit too trying to hard to be odd and surprising. but always, she can say things in such a wondrous way, things that i never realized anyone else could put in words. and it blows my mind.
