Yeah, I read them. How could I not with all the women in my life always prattling on about them. The surprise was that I didn't actually find the story to be completely offensive. I even enjoyed it a little. I liked Meyer's new twist on vampire/werewolf mythology. Half way through the first book I swore to kill myself with a bathroom plunger and corn meal if she mentioned Edward's chisled chin again. Good thing it is hard to kill yourself with the a fore mentioned items or I'd be dead many times over.

I first read this when I was about seventeen. I was going through a period of reading lots of books about the war and FSTWFF was lent to me by my English teacher. It certainly changed my perspective about war books and from then on anything that had cardboard characters and transparent storylines I found disappointing. This Bates novel was deep, poignant, haunting and exciting. I read it again a few years ago and though the style is a little dated now it's still a superb story. I'm a great fan of H.E. Bates' books but FSTWFF isn't my favourite - try The Purple Plain, or The Four Beauties.
