My husband and I love this book. It clearly shows, through illustrations, behaviors that are "no-nos" and those that are acceptable. Even before our son turned two, he knew what was considered a "no-no." Some of the illustrations are hilarious, but still effectively convey their message.

I think those stars don't do my thoughts justice, because I honestly thought this book was "ok" and I debated whether to say I liked it or not, because two stars looks a bit harsh, doesn't it? This was another one of my Book Club books, and it's a beast -- I'd never heard of it before, and I will say that I had to struggle through the first part because, although the writing was well-crafted & the voice was unique, I didn't connect with the character or his experiences, and he alienated me in a way which made me want to stop reading, not follow him on his journey. However, once Vladimir (the book's protagonist) reaches Prava, I thought the book picked up a bit, but he takes his time getting there. And when I say "picked up," I don't mean much outside action takes place, but his character develops more & I connected more with him as he fought his outsider / insider status and worked his way to an identity & better understanding of himself, perhaps & his peers. It was nice to look at stylistically as a way to write close third with a very definite personality & voice that stayed true to the character throughout -- the problem was that at times, I didn't necessarily care for the character or care whether he succeeded or failed in his adventures.

Read The Age of Innocence if you want to sample Wharton. Then see the movie with Daniel Defoe. Both are wonderful.

The story about the deliberate bombing of a French prison in WWII is amazing, although you have to work hard in some parts to keep everyone straight. There are lots of horror stories in war, about the idiots often in charge of the whole mess. WWII has some pretty sad stories of losses brought on by nothing more than pure stubborn stupidity but in the face of huge obstacles in preparation for the invasion of Normandy there were those with an incredible capacity to do some pretty wild and risky things in order to pave the way for that invasion. This is like reading a screenplay for one of those old WWII movies only its all true and based on actually documents and eyewitness accounts taken from previously classified files. Good read!!

It was very predictable the world Oliver tried to build just did not seem believable to me. I couldn't finish this book. In a genre full of these dystopian, teenage rebellion books this one cannot compete.
