I adore this book. My first taste of Hornby and I wanted to marry the man. His use of pop culture, especially music, references was so great! To me, as a big music fan, I loved trying to keep up with him. I also loved that Hornby is British. There's nothing better than witty British authors.

Well written momoir of a journalist who travels to China as a young Chinese Canadian allowed to study at Beijing University. Communism first intrigues her, but then she matures and sees that the theory and practice are 2 different things. Her descriptions of Tiananmen Square were both sad and scary. I still remember years after reading it how she stayed in the Palace hotel (I've stayed there and it was fun to read about this govt. run hotel) and how the people, especially the cook, were impacted by the events at Tiananmen Square.

A must read for anyone who wants to understand the meaning of life and how small we are in that realm. It is a philosphical take as opposed to the spiritual/religious views that we are bombarded on a dialy basis. It transformed my life in my early 20's, and a book I pick up when I start to doubt my place in the world. Boethius was a great philosopher, who like many, was executed for his beliefs.

My Heinlein phase is continuing. If you are easily offended by your views (or societies givens) being challenged or called into question Heinlein is not an author for you. Heinlein is probably the best author that I have found in the Science Fiction category. His futuristic worlds provide an excellent commentary of our current social life as well as remarkable insight into the human psyche. His characters are multi-dimensional and some of his best characters are very strong women. He writes women remarkably well in my opinion. Most of the best novels that I have read are his later works. He had some bubble gum novels during the beginning of his writing career and they are entertaining (but not nearly so memorable). This particular book has elements of a survivalist novel. It has many sociological discussions about race, government, and religion. I read it two days. Couldn't put it down.

Most books about the war try to make grand proclamations about what went wrong. Stewart simply tells you what happened in one province during one year. In the end his narrow view is much more interesting and informative than the broad theories championed by the pundits.

2.5 stars This story suffers from its length. It has a good premise but it is way too short for the execution. The past part takes a pretty good portion of the story but most of them is from Lane's point of view, so we have no idea why Matt leaves just like that. Oh, sure, we get Matt's explanation in a several paragraphs in the present, but that is just not enough. PLUS, the reconciliation is just too quick to solve with just Lane hitting Matt in the jaw. Hell, no ...
