Reading other reviews, especially negative ones, made me realize what different expectations people had for this. It's billed as romantic, but I didn't really see it as romantic in the traditional sense...it's mostly a story of friendship. Sometimes best friends, sometimes barely in touch, sometimes more than friends. Because you only catch up with these characters once a year, it's like eavesdropping through a swinging door...you only hear parts of the stories and know there's a lot you've missed. So it's a little frustrating, but it definately moves you along through their lives. There's no good guy to cheer for, no real action...it seems to just be observing these lives, with the accompanying intermittent dramas and down periods. Sometimes I wanted them to end up together and sometimes it seemed like the wrong way to go. While there are things to dislike about the characters, I didn't dislike them, though I was surprised I didn't have a a stronger reaction to the ending. I cared enough about them to see where they were going, but not enough for them to stay with me when I put the book down. Throughout the book, I'd think...oh this is why Dexter needs Emma, and vice versa, then think...oh no, this is why Emma can't be with Dexter and again, vice versa...both have their faults, though some stand out more than others, both would be significant to any relationship or friendship. Overall, I'm not sure who I would recommend this one to, even though I liked it. It's not a romance, but not literary, you could play pseudo-psychoanalysis, but the book doesn't really get into WHY they act like they do. Tough to classify, and not one I'll need to reread, but at the same time, if someome picked it up, I would tell them to give it a try: as long as they weren't looking for a 'romance' or something else specific from it.

Solid stories about kids in real life situations - abusive parents, obesity, racism and loss. The author shows that he knows how adolescents "tick". Some have humor, but all have serious emotion and face serious choices. For those that may have already read Ironman by the same author, you'll hear more about some of the characters - as they come to life in these short stories.

Did this book have an editor? Internet during the 1980s? WHAT?

I really enjoyed this cute little romantic read. For those of my friends looking for a clean read this book has one scene without a whole lot of descriptors. There is minimal swearing if any. I enjoyed the characters and found myself smiling often and laughing out loud on a few occassions.

Tigers and boats, oh my! Setting: try somewhere tropical near an ocean, or the zoo. Dress code: rags to keep off the sun.

This is one of those seven or so books that I keep loaning out to people because I think they just have to read them--and never get the books back. I have bought four copies of Watchmen since I first read it for a Graphic Novels class. I remember being completely astonished by the plot when I first read it, but the thing that keeps me coming back to it is the way all the stories, all the details and side plots, are brought together by the end and unified.
