The beginning was good, then went downhill.

Read it along time ago and remember it being way better than the movie, which was peopled which Chinese actors and actresses, while the story is set in Japan and about Japanese people. Nice work, Hollywood people.

In Nigel Barto’s Private Sessions, readers are tossed into the tortured life of Jordy Blackwell. Jordy is a man torn between what others want for him, what he wants for himself, and the life he actually lives. The sudden death of his grandmother leads to an inheritance that could very well save him from his tortured life. He strives to make his grandmother’s dream for him come true, but his attempts fail. Jordy falls victim to his inner demons, finding himself in therapy. His inner demons come to light through sessions, spilling forth emotions, loss, murder, and pain. Could private sessions be exactly what Jordy needs? Jordy’s story is quite intense. This emotion-packed story keeps you enthralled and needing to know what happens next. While Jordy’s decisions weren’t always the best ones, readers can definitely relate to his pain and emotional distress, as well as his inability to make good choices for himself. Private Sessions is a fast-paced read that brings realistic emotion front and center. This is my first experience with Barto’s work and I’m glad I had the opportunity. The characters and plot were well-developed, keeping me involved until the last page. I highly recommend Private Sessions to anyone looking for a fast, intriguing read.

Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen is about a girl by the name of Ruby Cooper, who had been living by herself in a little house ever since her mom left her unexpectedly. Once the police found out she was living by herself, she was forced to go live with her sister, Cora, who she hadn’t seen since she was ten years old. She was very reluctant to leave her home, but after a teacher at her new school assigns her a project on family, she learns more about her mom, and sister that she never knew before. I would call this book contemporary fiction. The plot wasn’t hard to follow at all, and held my attention the whole way through. I liked the fact that it was written in first person, because you can see the entire story from one person’s point of view, like it’s actually happening to you. I would recommend this book to any of the girls in class.

** spoiler alert ** ********WARNING***** CONATINS SPOILERS****** This one really hard to rate. There were parts of it I enjoyed and parts that were heavy. I enjoyed the "mystery" surrounding her aunts death and did not see the tie ins between that and her father before hand at all. I know death was a centeral theme but why so much. I know that they all had to tie together to make the story complete but that is where I feel she left some loose ends. I wanted more about the issue that her dead husband looked like her dead father. The characters were very deep but sometimes unbelievable. Could a lost love really make a mother as cold and uncaring as hers? I have so amny questions and thoughts about this book. I wish someone else had been reading this at same time so we could have discussed it.

When I read this book, I had a hard time with it for the first 100 pages or so. It seemed to creep along. I think I had to put it down a couple of times and come back to it. But when I finally got into it, I couldn't put it down. I wanted to see where it would finally go. And I was scared, but not disappointed by where it went. The frightening thing about this book is how prophetic it is. We now see the potential for some of the horrifying things that happen in this story. If the term "big brother" didn't come from this book, it was made infamous by it.

A charming little book about an amazing case of 16th century identity theft. The author really manages to bring her peasant subjects to life. I could picture them and their village life much more vividly than in many nonfiction history books (and even some fiction). I'm not sure if this is due to the soap opera-like plot or the actual writing, but either way it's a great read. Davis wrote this after working on the movie adaption of the case. It is certainly a tale made for the movies. All the compelling characters, strange coincidences and surprise twists are ready to go in the historical record. But the author sometimes seems to assume that her readers are already familiar with the story through the movie, which rubbed me the wrong way for some reason.
