I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It had Greek mythology monsters, which is a definite plus. But the story moved slowly and the girls weren't fleshed out at all. I also despise that I could clearly tell as we neared the end that nothing at all was going to get resolved, forcing you to read the next book. I hate that gimmick.

The Birthday Cake contains great photographs and some novel ideas. There are some cakes that I would really like to try making, and some recipes really seem to lend themselves to certain family members. One aspect that I felt made this book realy stand out from other cake cook/decorating books is its little use of fondant. Personally, I am not a fan of fondant and believe that beautiful cakes should taste even better than they look. A doll cake is featured in this book and it is admittedly the prettiest one I could find in a book or the internet. Also, the Confectioner's Sugar Frosting was delicious!

This was my favorite book the year I was 12; I read it that year too many times to count. It remains a favorite book of mine. (I’d already seen the movie when I was 9 or 10, and while it’s an excellent movie, I highly recommend the book.) It’s not a dated story if you think of it as a period piece. I love the bright, early reader Scout and her ethical lawyer loving father Atticus. Many other interesting characters as well, including the neighbor determined to get off drugs before she died-that one stuck with me. This is the best book ever about the power and consequences of making morally correct choices and living with integrity. Beautifully written with great descriptions of southern life in depression era America. This is an extraordinarily intelligent coming of age story, told from a child's point of view. ETA: After my last reread (I still can’t attempt to write a good review but) I wanted to add: I always forget how funny this book is; it’s very funny. Scout is a hoot. Also, I get something new from every reread! It’s a masterpiece. The movie is great too, but the book is a masterpiece. I suspect when I read it at age 12, I identified with having an older than average father. This time I liked Miss Maudie and Jem more than I ever have before, although Scout and Atticus remain my favorite characters. I can’t write a good review of this; it’s too important a book to me. Ditto the 3 other books I’ve also read more than 100 times.

Less cheesy than the Bridget Jones books.

I know. It's a YA lit chic thing. But I like it. And I teach students who read these books... Ok--I am about half way through and I really do like this book (I think I want to re-do my adolescence and be one of the Septembers!) Oh goodness. The girls are having S-E-X. But, I know I read the other three, but I am having trouble remembering all that happened--I read them very quickly and love it all the way through, but then don't remember all the details. I'll have to track down a student to remind me. In the end, this is a great summer reading for a YA reader.

I bought this book to read during Spring Break and read it in one day! It was an awesome story and the writing is a joy. It also helped that it had it's hilarious moments.

De geschiedenis die door nakomelingen vergeten is en door historici genegeerd wordt. Het is de geschiedenis van gewone mensen, levend in oude dorpen in een eeuwige wereld.

** spoiler alert ** Seventeen-year-old Noelle Kramer was filled with the hopes and dreams of first love, believing that in Thad MacKaslin she had found the man she would spend the rest of her life with. But on the night they were to elope, she learned he had left town without a word, and she believed she would never see him again. Although her heart was broken, she planned to marry another and at least have a home and family of her own, until a tragic accident left her parents dead and Noelle blind, destroying her plans for the future. Now, five years later, in the winter of 1883, Noelle lives a quiet life with her aunt, uncle, and cousins. Her blindness has caused her to give up all her dreams of love, marriage, and children. On their way home from town during a blizzard, Noelle and her aunt are almost killed by a runaway horse, but a stranger saves them - a stranger Noelle soon realizes is Thad MacKaslin, who has returned to their hometown of Angel Falls, Montana. And although both Noelle and Thad try to deny it, they still have feelings for each other. Has God given them a second chance at love and happiness together? This book was one of the most enjoyable historical romances I've read in a while. Fans of western and inspirational romances are sure to enjoy this story of two people who had given up on a future together but are given a second chance to realize their dreams. The love story was incredibly sweet and emotional, rather than so many romances which focus on the physical romance but neglect the emotional side of a relationship. I'd highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy a sweet and emotional romance without all the graphic scenes.
