This book was good and interesting. I think the only thing I didn't like about it was it was a book assigned in Gr. 8 and that meant we had to answer the most annoying questions and had to read it as a class which I found very slow. Other then that it's good. wonderful story that seems very real.

(4.5 / 5) I was on my very first teaching round when Columbine happened - and although I was in Australia it affected me deeply. I was supposedly starting a new career, and suddenly I realised the magnitude of the responsibility I had. Kids would be in my care for a great majority of their day. If I got caught up in such an event, how would I react? It seemed too vast to comprehend, and as more news and speculation began to filter out over the next few weeks I would find myself dwelling on it. What could cause kids to perpetrate such a horrendous act against their fellow students? Cullen offers a compelling and thorough look at the events leading up to the massacre and what happened in the school. He breaks down many of the myths and urban legends that grew out of the story and the reasoning behind Dylan and Eric's murderous spree. Although the Klebold and Harris families have largely stayed silent with the press, there are some poignant portraits of the families of the victims and how grief affected them all differently. The only thing I can really fault with the book is that once again more detail is given to the victims who were given the quasi-celebrity status by the media - I am not in anyway denigrating Rachel Scott or Cassie Bernall or the like. It's just that I would also have liked to have known a little more about the kids that are hardly talked about. They deserve to be remembered as well.

Getting through many parts of this book was an ordeal. First, the story kept jumping around from the grandfather's youth to other times in his life, these other characters and then to the present. I found it confusing at times. Second, I will admit I am not a "rich detail" kind of reader and that's what this book was full of. Third, there were all these stories going on: about the grandfather, the Tiger's Wife, the undead man, the apothecary, the butcher, the doctor herself dealing with her grandfather's death - all with the backdrop of war. The multiple stories about the undead man just about made me quit. Fourth, another reader mentioned that there was no sense of place. That person was right. The setting is somewhere in Croatia or Bosnia. I've been to the region and it would have been great to be able to identify with real places. Last, I don't know what the whole point of the story was. War is bad? Eastern European superstitions/fables? The love of a granddaughter for her grandfather? Loss of country? Muslim v. Christian? If I hadn't read other reader reviews, some of it would have gone right over my head. The only reason I gave it two stars was some of the writing was very good. But, for me, it was too much extemporaneous information and not enough plot.

After the fantasy of The Golden Compass, it's very jarring, and extremely effecting, to see The Subtle Knife, the second of the His Dark Materials trilogy, begin on our own Earth. The story of Will's discovery of the knife, the places that it leads him, and his meeting of Lyra, is as engaging as the book that preceded this one. I'm giving it lower marks because the story isn't as muscular or focused; sometimes it feels like we're killing time until the third book. Nevertheless, this is first-rate fantasy, and an enjoyably necessary step to the trilogy's conclusion.
