painfully unengrossing. never did finish it, though i tried. it was impossible to follow murakami's descriptions of fantasy realities because the descriptions felt arbitrary and undeveloped. i'd be curious what his other books are like, though.

So it's the fourth one in a series I guess and I think it would have been less confusing if I had read the earlier ones because it took effort to figure out who was who, and who was a vampire and who wasn't, etc. Also, the story is mostly about the characters and the serial killer plot is very much in the background. The writing style is unique and I can't quite explain it but it was a little refreshing and a little confusing all at the same time. I got this book at my friend's wedding (the books were part of the centerpeices and we got to take them home) so the real question is would I read another one? A: Probably, especially if it was sitting at my house.

I really wanted to like this book more because the plot held such promise and was so original. However, I didn't like all the jumping between characters with years and years between stories and just when you'd get interested in a thread of the story, suddenly you never hear again what happens except in bits and pieces as told by another character's story. Thought the ending was cheesy and disappointing. Liked it but thought it could have been so much more...

Just a few chapters in. Fascinating and powerful. His story of life in the concentration camps is harrowing. His notion of the will to find meaning and that meaning is contextual, individual and subjective makes sense and appeals to me.

Wow, for a rather outdated large book, with subject matter you would think was dry and boring...this book was the best US history I have ever read, or been taught all through school. It tells the truth about our history, rather than the normal rant we all are taught. For instance, Columbus is no hero, but a murderer who massacres entire populations of islands. The book starts with Columbus and ends with terrorism in the 2000s. It was hard for me to read the criticisms of Carter and Clinton, but I do believe this author, who pulled no punches. Read this one.
