I wanted to like this book - I really did. Perhaps I was looking forward to it too much, and the anticipation did not live up to the reality. Perhaps it was because this was my first read in the Argeneau vampire series. Regardless, I was let down by this book. The story follows Thomas and Inez as they search for Thomas's aunt Margarite, an immortal who has gone missing. In the first half of the novel, when Thomas and Inez meet and get to know each other, the writing is good and the storyline tight. Once they return to England, however, things get messy. Not just with the plot or the writing or the absurdity that every couple from the previous novels would all cram up in a townhouse to tie up loose ends...everyone, and I mean everyone, was sucking on blood bags. Pop it on your fangs and suck a bag of blood. Page after page of this type of feeding got too much for me. Give me a normal, throat ripping vampire, not these weak-ass Canadian vamps!

A fun mystery series based on the characters of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy while working in so many other of Jane Austen's characters from other books! Worth the read!

I didn't expect to like Last American Man when I realized it was by the author of Eat, Pray, Love (a book I couldn't get into at all, but maybe it's just my thick middle class blood that made the story and the "feminism lite" a bit precious for my taste). She is a good writer though and has a lovely way with words. LAM is the story of Eustace Conway, a modern naturalist living today in the Blue Ridge mountains. Eustace is quite a character and thinks a lot of himself (as does, apparently, the author) but his story is fascinating.

I waited until a Discovery of Witches came out in paperback, which I heartily regret now because this book is amazing. It is thick and large, and I read it in 2 weeks. Knowing it's a trilogy and the next two books were not out yet, I tried to resist hurling to the end, but I could not. I possibly reread it 5 more times because I could not pry my hands off of it. This book is about witches and vampires and demons. I feel as though the vampire theme has been beaten to death, but I love reading about witches, so I gave it the benefit of the doubt. I'm glad I did. It does seem to vaguely echo Twilight (which I wasn't enthused about) but it is infinitely better (broody vampire, helpless-like protagonist). A Discovery of Witches centers around Diana Bishop who is a witch that has turned her back on her magic, and Matthew, a vampire who is trying to discover the mystery of witches, vampires, and demons. It is a very engaging book. Diana grows in the book into a strong-willed witch. I also love how Diana and Matthew are professors, and how the mystery of witches, vampires, and demons turns into intellectual, academic debate. I can't wait for book two!

i had to read this for school and i disliked the majority of it. i didnt like the way it was written and it was a little too graphic at times (when christopher was on the train in the bathroom comes to mind).

I read this while I was at L'Abri. It was a nice reminder that I'm quite human even within my imperfections.

Ms. Miller steps away from the chilling elements typically found in her stories and takes us into a sweltering ‘Jungle of Deceit’. For me the suspense pulled this story along; the mildly romantic subplot took a back seat to the mysteries that were filtered throughout this book. A beautifully descriptive setting, typical of Ms. Miller, shows us a hidden compound deep within the jungle that provides little sense of comfort for her characters. The details of Mayan artifacts and those who search to uncover them, or those who wish to profit off of them, are also well written. However, the hero and heroine lacked something I’m not quite able to put my finger on in this particular tale. She makes it work though - the books is about more than exchanging witty digs in avoidance of the inevitable, there is intense adventure in which two people are trying to find out the truth about the compound, their roles in the plan and the deceit of those in their lives. Love develops as a consequence, I get that. In short, Ms. Miller always pulls through with an enjoyable page turning read and we should look forward to her next piece. [Rating based on genre]

It was mildly interesting. Holly Golightly was interesting. Nothing happened. Well, things happened, but the events were all so detached from one another. I wasn't impressed. And the movie? Whatever.
