Daniel Tammet is an autistic savant. He can do incredible math problems in his head, and holds the record for reciting memorized digits of pi. If you tell him your birthday, he will tell you the day of the week you were born on. How does he do it? I'm not sure Daniel's book actually answers that question, but it does let you see how he perceives the workings of his mind. Days are different colors, numbers are shapes. His story, told in his own words, is amazing. Not only that, but the people who were around him when he was growing up, supported this "different" child by being sensitive to his needs, and allowing him to be who he was--his family (especially his parents), his teachers, and finally his partner Neil. By being willing to push through his own shyness and fears and put himself out in the world, Daniel gives all of us a glimpse into what it's like to not fit into our norms.

Great book, but heavy and sad. There are so many levels of meaning! And the entire book can be summed up in the first paragraph. Golding is genius.

One of my favorite characters, and stories have stayed strong despite the length of the series (unlike many other authors who begin to phone it in after a few novels). Character development of the sidekicks in this book is wonderful. Can't wait for more.

I loved, loved, loved this book as a little girl and I love, love, love it as an adult. I also fairly recently purchased the Sullivan Co. productions of the Anne of Green Gables series which is a remarkably excellent adaptation of the book. It brings back a lot of old memories and Gilbert Blythe still remains the romantic hero/ideal of my adulthood as he was in my adolescence. Absolutely delightful, I finished this first volume in two days.

Definitely a solid, entertaining read. Oscar Wilde definitely addressed some very important and interesting questions about human nature. Definitely worth the read.

This book is a gem. I just picked it up from the book store without any prior knowledge and I was loving it from the get go. The author takes one situation and picks it apart by giving you the views of all participants. I loved it..

Oliver Twist is a passive character in his own tale. Even though the book is named after him, things only happen to him; he rarely makes anything happen. The times when he does actually actively do something, he is reprimanded. Poor kid.

This is a collection of three Finnish novellas by an author with anachronistic style and sensibilities. I was not convinced by her portrayal of Baltic Europe during the Renaissance (Kallas was greatly interested in Estonia, especially) as being mainly a hotbed for ignorance, cruelty and tragedy. However, her archaic tone and prose style are fascinating. Of the two novellas here that I read, I especially recommend her unique werewolf story: "The Wolf's Bride."

Aah...this was the sweet, gentle fable I remember. Yes, it's a bit sappy, but it doesn't bother me at all in this one. I love the message and I love the Little Prince.

Full of suspense and intrigue, as well as familiar last names [and two very familiar Downworlders], this book is entirely gripping and leaves you wanting more. I cannot wait for the next book to come out, which I hope is soon! I would like some of the questions in my head [and Tessa's] answered, as well as more of the characters that I've grown so attached to...
