There is a part of my brain that recognizes this as a brilliant book, perhaps one of my favorites of the Updike novels I've read so far, in terms of language, style, ans skill of characterizations, but another part of my brain so thoroughly despises the protagonist, Rabbit, that I need to put it aside and finish it at another time, because I'm just not enjoying it. I'm sure, or at least, I'm hoping, that Rabbit grows, changes, matures, blah, blah, blah somewhere down the road, but right now, I'm not willing to accompany his self-centered, immature ass on that journey.

4 star science thriller (top 25% of the genre) written in another century in another style, but still a heck of a story (and short!). For my full review, see ScienceThrillers.com

This was an amazing book! Goodwin is a gifted historian, and in this memoir, she tells us stories of her childhood. In this compelling story, the author describes her love for baseball mixed with the history of the late 40's and 50's. It's humorous, dramatic, endearing, and fun! I recommend this to everyone!

Perhaps I should have put this on the fantasy bookshelf. Harder going than the Odyssey.

I know I'm late to the bandwagon, but Haruki Murakami may become one of my favourite authors. Set over the course of one night in a city in Japan, After Dark explores the life of some interconnected characters. Murakami blends a modern tale of those that live "on the wrong side of the tracks" with just a dash of mystery and science fiction. Lovely. After Dark is short and a great way to get started with Murakami.

4.5 stars I have to admit that I only give City of Fallen Angles 4.5 stars for selfish reasons. It was a 5 the whole way... until I got to the last 2 pages. I love Cassandra's writing! Through the experiences in the first 3 books, I know that she can take a situation that is shocking and totally hopeless and evolve it into a "happily ever after." So, I am most confident that she will take the shocking and totally hopeless ending of Fallen Angels and turn it good and happy once again in the future books. But now... the waiting begins! I love (and have missed) the Jace/Simon banter, the beautiful arrogance of Jace, and the chemistry of the whole cast of characters. It was like coming home to good friends!

"An acting company conceived an idea in 1594 that it realized in 1608 and that helped it to run for forty-eight years as the unrivalled leader of its time. In 1599 the company conceived a management system that made its actors their own managers and financiers, creating the only effective democracy of its time in totalitarian England." Well, an effective democracy absent the involvement of any women except the supporting monarch. Academic. As detailed a history of The King's Men as can be achieved, given the availability of evidence, from its origins to its end when the theatres were closed for nearly twenty years, by order of The Privy Council, for reasons of plague, politics and puritanism.

So I re-read this and it still has the same effect on me. This was a book club selection.
