Damian Hu 476086452d2c0 — Jeff Eugenides obviously did a great deal of genetic research into the subject matter of this well written novel about a coming of age hermaphrodite, going back in time to trace the genetic history of Calliope, her/his parents, grandparents and their Greek ancestry. Its a sort of genetic detective story. Fascinating, funny, touching and a book for all genders. The writing is poetic, the story imaginative, and it allows compassion and understanding about a rare and not well understood genetic condition.
