Non-fiction essays. This grabbed my attention because between living on my own and years spent traveling for work, I have cooked and dined alone quite a bit, but for me the book was just OK overall.

I have read all the potter books, and have seen all the movies! I really enjoy harry potter. If you like him, you'll love this book. Quick read even though it's 760 pages!

** spoiler alert ** So, I've marked my review as containing spoilers, and you might be wondering how a book that became a classic movie can be spoiled. Well, here it is: this entire book is fiction. I know, I know, you already knew it was fiction. Well, I'm talking about the 3 introductions (intro to the original 1973 book, intro to the 25th anniversary edition, and intro to the 30th anniversary edition) as well as the story itself. I was both relieved and disappointed to find out it was all fiction--relieved because he seemed like an incredible jerk and I didn't like that one of my favorite movies had been done by a jerk; disappointed because I was hoping to get more insight into the background of one of my favorite movies AND because I was hoping that the insight I got was not that something I thought was true (that the book was originally written by S. Morgenstern) was not true. Still, I have to give the author a lot of credit for his imagination and the way he constructed the backstory of the book. I also have to say that I am grateful that approximately 13 years passed between the writing of the book and the filming of the movie, because in that time he really improved a lot of the story (as he did the screenplay for the movie, too). I was disappointed in the book in that there is a lot of misogyny and portrayal of Buttercup as just a pretty face (more than this, as a bimbo), plus the love between Westley and Buttercup as essentially based on looks and not true love. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but it was mostly because I love the movie. It did give some nice backstory on Fezzik and Inigo's lives. I recommend this book for fans of the movie.

For me, there exists no better urban fantasy than The Hollows series. I simply adore all the characters. Rachel has a 'real'-ness to her that many can't really seem to capture in other books. Black Magic Sanction tells what happens to witches whom the Coven deems have "gone bad" and has lots of Al too- because all of us want to see more of that! By the end of the book, Pierce had certainly grown on me and I hope he sticks around for a few more stories. All-in-all a must-read for Kim Harrison fans.

I first read Oz at age three. I still somedays wish to be the Scarecrow.
What did I just read. Don't get me wrong: I loved it. I just don't think I've read anything like it before (for the record, this is my third or fourth Murakami, so I'm no stranger to his wonderful works...yet...) What's really interesting about this one is that at times it felt like I was reading something straight out of a studio Ghibli film, except more philosophical and with sex scenes. Other times I felt like I had turned a page only to stumble into a horror novel, especially toward the end.

It's a great story about the trials and tribulations of a family. It's interesting how society can deem people to be complete reprobates yet at the same time be incredibly bright. It shows the fine line between funcional and dysfunctional families. Likewise, it has stories about making the most of whatever you have. It offers a really different perspective about growing up impoverished, constantly on the move, and yet enlightened at the same time. It's a great read, and once you start reading you'll find it difficult to put down.

I read this in my teens, and I remember being totally captivated by the book, reading it for eight hours straight, not able to tear myself away. I don't know what I would think of it if I read it now, though. I may give it a second look once I pull my old books out of storage.

Memoir of 1947 post-war Europe, fledgling jounalist, written by Paula Fox whose illustrious screenwriter parents abandoned her at early age- her book Borrowed Finery explores her childhood. This book finds her at 23, sent to be a stringer in Prague and Warsaw, spare portraits of the demoralized rubble-strewn cities, then Spain and the Franco influence with allusions to defeated Republicans living in semi-hiding. Interesting to see the way memory works at such a distance, you can imagine the Paris of the time and the clothes and food and trains and hotels and sense of purpose in the odd selection of characters she highlights. I seem to return from time to time to chronicles of WWII and its aftermath- fueled by movies like the recent Black Box (Hollywoodized but interesting!) Interesting juxtaposition of privilege (her job arranged by powerful parents) and privation (post-war conditions in Eastern Europe abominable and sad). A good read on the plane from LA. and stood in contrast to the bright mechanized world of the present in its most hedonistic frenzied trendy consumer state...
