Leesa Kovarna lkovarna2a05 — ** spoiler alert ** So, I've marked my review as containing spoilers, and you might be wondering how a book that became a classic movie can be spoiled. Well, here it is: this entire book is fiction. I know, I know, you already knew it was fiction. Well, I'm talking about the 3 introductions (intro to the original 1973 book, intro to the 25th anniversary edition, and intro to the 30th anniversary edition) as well as the story itself. I was both relieved and disappointed to find out it was all fiction--relieved because he seemed like an incredible jerk and I didn't like that one of my favorite movies had been done by a jerk; disappointed because I was hoping to get more insight into the background of one of my favorite movies AND because I was hoping that the insight I got was not that something I thought was true (that the book was originally written by S. Morgenstern) was not true. Still, I have to give the author a lot of credit for his imagination and the way he constructed the backstory of the book. I also have to say that I am grateful that approximately 13 years passed between the writing of the book and the filming of the movie, because in that time he really improved a lot of the story (as he did the screenplay for the movie, too). I was disappointed in the book in that there is a lot of misogyny and portrayal of Buttercup as just a pretty face (more than this, as a bimbo), plus the love between Westley and Buttercup as essentially based on looks and not true love. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but it was mostly because I love the movie. It did give some nice backstory on Fezzik and Inigo's lives. I recommend this book for fans of the movie.

Alyssa Mallone alyssamallone — Terrific premise and the photos alone tell the story with their haunting images. I was positively enthralled with this novel at the beginning, but felt that it lost a bit of steam (and structure) by the end. I was expecting a horror novel or ghost story, but it ended up resembling "X-Men" stories (which I don't dislike by any means, but it was a sharp turn from the first pages). The book is worth reading for the spooky and unsettling photos, though.

App Bullz appbullzz — Lots of fun! Simple, bold text introduces M,C,D,L,X,V,I and the way to properly use them to convey numbers. The illustrations are backdrops, but fun (gladiators and lions, etc.) This book would work well for kids, but also is a fun read for adults interested in the subject- especially those who are often stumped by the 'Nero's 250' type crossword clues.
