I loved this book. I'm positive that anyone could read it and enjoy it. The next two books are great, too.

Saw a friend review this and remembered I was forced to read it as part of my government school education, it is ok, nothing spectacular. I guess it is supposed to be a metaphor for something, some say about Christ, but if we just read it for what it is it really just seems like a bummer fishing trip. This books reputation as a great work in literature is entirely undeserved.

This was an amazingly creepy book. It was wonderful because it was intellectual and also scary at the same time, in a supernatural way that actually sort of seemed real. I'm not usually one for horror books or the supernatural, but I loved this one. I think it was because I am really into academia and this book encompassed that very well.

I first read You Shouldn't Have to Say Good-bye in the fourth grade as an ESL student, struggling to learn English. A novel about a young woman's cancerous dying mother probably wasn't the best book for the purpose, but I remember how even then, with my limited grasp of the English language, I was completely moved by this book. In the novel, teenager Sarah Marrow and her mother share a deep and cherished bond -- a bond that was tested and proved unshakable when her mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Sarah progresses through the stages of grief and her mother's health continually worsens. They both struggle to cope, sometimes pushing away from each other only to find what they need most is each other. Eventually, both are forced to confront the inevitable. The novel is mostly painful. But that has nothing to do with the cancer itself, or even the macabre description of the mother's moment of death (and boy was Hermes descriptive.) The most heartwrenching moments were when the mother and daughter pleaded with each other -- mother pleaded with Sarah to come to grips, and Sarah pleaded with her mother to stop, even though both are at the mercy of something greater -- death. Though the novel is quite short, it packs a wallop. There are a few points in the novel that just made me break down and cry, while most of the book kept me misty-eyed. The description of the death itself is very picturesque and disturbed me for quite some time as a child. Also, the message of the novel was ambiguous and lacked focus. Nevertheless, I strongly recommend this book to teenagers and adults alike.

I picked up this book as a young girl. Since then, I've lost track of the number of times I've re-read it. It's a high-seas adventure for any girl who's a tom-boy at heart.

Patti Smith's memoir is poetically written. Her tender portrait of her lover-turned-friend Robert Mapplethorpe takes the reader through the blossoming of two artists, set in New York City during the 1960s and 1970s. Wonderful snapshots of the city and cameos of famous artists and authors bring this story to life. Highly recommended.

I agree with the person who said this was somewhat self-absorbed. It was given to me by my daughter, who was pregnant when she read it. I was really concerned about how it might have effected her confidence in her ability to have a normal delivery after reading it. It was really all about Rebecca Walker...no one could have things as tough as she did...

A stunningly beautiful novel with one of my favorite first sentences ever. At its core, "Love in the Time of Cholera" is about one thing: love. I've been warned away from the recently released film version though. Its a shame when they go and ruin wonderful books when they translate them to film. tsk tsk.
