The metaphors are heavy handed and the themes would be deemed cliche by the most optimistic and positive of readers. To be perfectly honest, I know I'm supposed to like it, but there's little to like.

For the kids who have outgrown Smile. I wish I had liked Anya more. I related very closely (my god! those are my thighs in a comic book!) but that doesn't mean I found her appealing.

I taught this for the first time this year and found that the discussions on repentance were great - and Hawthorne has a clear agenda which just makes the book even more fun ... the ideas he presents are truly timeless.

For a "first" novel by this author, I thought he did a pretty good job. A 30 year old man has a one night, one time stand and throws his marriage away. He suddenly finds himself trying to raise his 4 year old son on his own and soon discovers it's not as easy as it looks! From the dust jacket: "Harry Silver has it all: a beautiful wife, a wonderful son, a great job in the media-but in one night he throws it all away. Just yesterday Harry gave himself a shiny red sports car for his thirtieth birthday. Today he faces the baffling questions of a suddenly single dad: * How do you wash a four-year old's hair? * Should he eat green spaghetti for breakfast? * What do you tell his Mommy from the emergency room phone? In this poignant and witty novel, Harry has to bring up his child alone, look after this parents, work out his relationships and hold down a job. As millions of women have discovered before him, that is not as simple as it may have seemed. Man and Boy is by turns funny, sharp, warm and heart-wrenching. It is a brilliantly engaging novel from one of the most gifted and influential commentators writing today."

Wow. This book immediately jumped to my top 10 list. Seriously, like within the first hundred pages I knew it was going to be fantastic and David Mitchell didn't disappoint. Without giving too much away, I think there are two things about this book that are amazing. First, is Mitchell's ability to create such disparate voices in each of the time periods that are portrayed. Each voice was so distinct, so clear, so believable, and so utterly fun, that I felt like I was starting a new book each time a new story started. Great stuff. I also loved the way he played around with the chronology of the stories, each rising and abruptly ending until the last story in the middle of the book, and then falling and each story completing until the end. A lot of fun.

Jen, we usually are sympatico on our books, but hated this.....hated the twins (both sets), needed to chope 300 pages....had a good twist at the end but by then I didn't care...oh well!

First Line: "Grief came in waves, hard and choppy, buffeting and breaking the heart." This is the fourth in the Bride Quartet series. I didn't particularly care for Parker, the heroine, from her appearances in the other three books. However, Roberts did an excellent job developing her character and bringing her down from an anal, type A annoyance, to an empathetic and relate-able character. And her romantic interest, Malcolm (or Mal) is my favorite kind of hero - "It's hard to resist a bad boy who's a good man." He is certainly rough around the edges - a motorcycle-driving, leather-wearing, mechanic. But of course he has a soft spot inside. He is also appropriately wounded, but not whiny. Their relationship was steamy and sweet and funny. I enjoyed this last installment to the series.

Who knew Carrie Fisher was so funny and so troubled? A very quick read, but plenty of vulgarity and language. Not for the faint of heart or basically any non-Terrill!

This is one of my favorite books. I could not put it down. Loved that the story is played out throughout Chicago neighborhood.
