This is the first biography I read of President Coolidge. It is very dry and academic in style, but I didn't mind. I now believe that if any twentieth-century American president could be called a good man, it must have been Calvin Coolidge. He had possibly the most outwardly uninteresting and unappealing personality of any president, but who cares? because I believe he was more committed to leaving the American people alone, to not intruding in their everyday lives, than any president outside the Founding Fathers' generation. He was also probably the president most committed to fiscal discipline: every year of his one term saw the budget balanced; taxes were repeatedly cut, and Coolidge once made a speech about reducing pencil expenditures! About his laconic and unsociable personality, there is a plausible theory in another bio I plan to read. Calvin Coolidge's younger son, Calvin Jr., died in 1924--the same year Coolidge was elected for his own term after replacing the deceased president Harding. Robert E. Gilbert believes that because of Calvin Jr.'s death, Calvin Sr. suffered from clinical depression throughout his term, which would explain his quiet, passive and often socially inept behavior. I also plan to read Coolidge's autobiography, which he wrote not long after leaving office.

I just finished this and immediately started back at the beginning to read it again--something I can't remember having done before. A shockingly tragic, hilarious, triumphant, and depressing memoir of a desperate addiction cycle and treatment.

I just never felt anything toward the main characters in this book - kind of just launched into the whole story without making you understand who they were...definitely not as good as Midwives.

If you loved Memoirs of a Geisha, you will adore this book. Great pacing and a beautiful story.

This one is the best yet in the It Girl serial. Doesn't matter that it's a ghostwriter who writes it because it was GOOD! I always liked the It Girl better than Gossip Girl. The plots are bit less disjointed. Less skipping between the chapters. But this one was very exciting. I can't wait for the new one. How are they going to get themselves out of this one. Tinsley and Callie are such bitches and Jenny is so nice. They can't put the fire on her. It was Tinsley who did it with Julian's Zippo. J and J are in trouble.

Interesting. The chapter headings are nicely done & adds to the fact & reality of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. I was fascinated by the water systems & Roman aquaducts.

This book was good. After finding out who the father was I liked going back seeing how much the author foreshadowed it.

** spoiler alert ** This felt really long.... some sections of it flew and others dragged. I actually read book two first and didn't enjoy it as much as I enjoyed this one. I think Danny was a more likeable character. I found the historical information very interesting and ended up googling several of the events to get more information. I'd never heard of the molasses explosion before, that sounds so disgusting. The riot at the end just made me sad. It was interesting to tie it back to current riots and the devastation they have caused. For some reason, this one seemed to focus on the rapes which made me feel ill and vulnerable. I am sure that was the point. Connor seemed like a wasted character to me. I'm not sure if he plays a role in the third book but I don't remember him from the second book. I loved that Luther ended up back with Lila and Desmond. That was a truly happy ending and he knew how lucky he was at that point. It seemed silly that as wiley as McKenna was, he didn't think that Luther would open up the chest to see what was in it. It seemed so obvious.

Can't wait to read, there's so many great reviews!
I liked this book even better than Glass Castle; quick read about a sassy lady.
