This installment is all over the map. It felt a little disjointed but it still works. Ms. Harrison knows her characters and is a master at bringing out new dimensions to their lives in creative ways. I am not a hardcore fan of the series but find that I can't put it down once I pick one up. The main character, Rachael Morgan is a witch. Witches are not my favs because the magical rules can be confusing if it's not done well. Ms. Harrison not only does it well, she is constantly building on the magical foundation to give Rachael more range. I like that. In this installment, Rachael is being hunted by the white witch conven that governs witches. She is considered a black witch because she can twist a black curse and summon demons. It's complicated. On the one hand, Rachael is a black witch whether she wants to face it or not. On the other hand, she is not evil. The coven doesn't really care because they are earth witches and anything outside that world is evil to them. They want her dead or imprisioned or worst. As usual, Rachael tries to fix the problem without getting her hands dirty or getting her friends killed. I don't understand why she has not figured out that some problems have to die to be solved. Piscary should have taught her that but no. Nick is back in this installment to make the point all over again. I liked where Rachael is with Ivy although I still think that relationship is dysfunctional. Jenks goes through some changes in this book resulting in my respect meter going up. I was tired of waiting on his situation to be resolved and it was. It might sound cold but I believe in pulling the bandage off and getting it over with. Ceri makes a brief appearance but it was important. Trent is not in many scenes but he becomes a major part of how it is all resolved. The high point for me was a newly developed love of Al and Pierce. Rachael still has emotional scars from Nick and Kristen which she is trying to put into perspective. I don't know what happened to the guy named Marshall but he is mentioned twice and doesn't come back in this one. Pierce goes all in to protect her and win her heart. A part of me wanted to see them get together while being concerned that it would be the beginning of the end of Pierce. Why? Because Ms. Harrison doesn't seem to want to give Rachael a long term mate. Rachael love life is like milk -- limited shelf life. I am going with 4 stars because the plot did not flow as smoothly as I would have liked but the story was good overall.

I picked up this book after learning it won the Newbery Award for young adult fiction this year. It was a mixed bag. The first half was too all over the place, introducing too many characters and not focusing enough on Taylor (the main character), consequently I didn't really "care" about what happened to her. Things really shaped up in the second half, Marchetta got more into the character development and the story sucked me in. By the end of the book, I was a fan. : )

This novella is a quick and lovely read. I read it at work in one evening (we had a lot of down time) and I had to keep myself from sniffling several times. The characters are perfectly fleshed out, and the dialog rings true. The plot is simple, but that doesn't stop this from being a page-turner. Actually, through Adams' deft handling of prose and plot, you care not only for the main characters but the secondary ones as well. Clark, Alex's straight best friend, was a treat! I liked that this was a straight-forward (pardon the pun) romance and not erotica. Often times erotica writers feel they have to throw in a sex scene every other chapter, whether it makes sense to the plot or not. Here we just get a marvelous love story, one that makes your heart go out to young Jared and his even younger love Alex.

Started a new book "Wide Awake" by Erwin McManus and it's helping me bring clarity to what God has put in our hearts. He says our lives will always be limited by the size of our dreams and that sometimes the limitations we are willing to accept establish the boundaries of our existence. I feel to often we let people define our dreams for us in that we allow them to resize them for us by pointing out their perceived view of our circumstances, limitations and abilities. We also listen to the voice inside that will tell us we can't do it because we're not worthy, too old, not talented, etc. If God has given you a dream, go for it, there is nothing more devasting to a human spirit than to quit dreaming. We all know the story of Joseph and how it took him decades to see the fulfillment of his dreams. I always thought he spoke out of school by telling his dreams to his brothers. This only caused them to resent him and consequently sell him into slavery. We have, as a whole, just assumed that was God's plan all along in order to achieve the outcome. But what if it wasn't that it took that long to fulfill the dreams but that it took that long to make the dreamer, to make him the man God intended him to be. I know Joseph told the brothers that what they meant for evil God meant it for good, but we know that God can use things meant for evil to His advantage. Romans 8:28 "When God gives you a dream, he raises the bar." He wants you to expand your horizons. [side note, the last show I worked on was "Raising The Bar" :-) ironic.] We are going for the dream we believe God has placed in our hearts and in spite of all the obstacles, I'm excited. I know it can only succeed if He is in it and I know that I know that this is of Him. How?, only He knows.

This was my first exposure to David Sedaris. I have not stopped reading him yet. The great thing about his books is that you can re-read them and they always make you laugh. And you can also get them on C.D. for car rides and they will keep you awake and laughing out loud the whole ride.
