Very fun debut novel from Lian Dolan exploring, in part, what happens when the lives of the rich fall apart. Helen traded in her hippie roots for stability and security. In exchange, she abandoned her Master's thesis and became an uber-mom, on every committee, private schooling for her son, activities galore, and an in with the movers and shakers of Pasadena. This all comes to an end when her husband is run over during the Rose Parade just after admitting his unfaithfulness and his plans to leave her. Helen is left with the indignity of keeping her husband's secrets, (his affair, their financial situation, their lack-luster marriage), in order to secure some type of future for her son and keep the family name intact. As a new part of the workforce, Helen returns to her passion, the classics and archaeology at the museum, where she quickly falls for a real-life Indiana Jones. Helen must decide just what it is she has going with Patrick, and reconcile what her dreams are with the reality of her situation. One of my all-time favorites. Annie Dillard pays close attention to the minute details, and describes so well the impressions of childhood. As a child, there were things that I thought only I knew, only I noticed. But here I find that Annie Dillard describes those exact thoughts and experiences that I thought were mine alone. It was as if I was reading about my own childhood thoughts. Very comfortable yet beautiful.

I knew the story of Monte Cristo long before I even considered reading the book, through the wonderful Depardieu miniseries. Now I finally grabbed this and I'm so glad I did. Although the miniseries is good I now realised they changed the story quite a lot. The book is sizzling with cruel vengeance but also kind heartedness and undying love and complex character relations.

I listened to this - downloaded from Audible Books. The reader is unfamiliar with the Tri Cities area of Washington State and mispronounced some of the place names. Something about listening brought all the weaknesses of the book to the ear . . . .
