So, I've been going back and forth between rating this as an "I liked it" or an "It was okay." I liked this book, but I also hated it, and I'm not sure I can articulate why. I think maybe it has something to do with my fear that if I were to ever write a book, it would probably turn out sounding a lot like this one. Maybe Eggers got too far into my brain, and it's not always fun reading your thoughts on a page. I think part of it is it sounded too "my generation" with it's MTV-postpostmodern-ADD-everything'srelevant-totallymeta tone. See, there I am doing it, writing just like Eggers. The thing that hooked me into reading the whole thing (other than the interesting premise of a memoiresque book about a guy who loses both his parents to cancer within a few months of each other) is that Eggers has a brother that's fourteenish years younger than he is. After his parents die, he ends up raising his brother, and so, much of the book describes his relationship with his brother. I related so much to those descriptions, since my brother's twelve years younger than me. Granted, my parents haven't died, but so many of the details (i.e. what it's like to try and teach a younger sibling the lyrics to a Journey song while riding with the windows down in the car) felt like they were lifted from a day in my life with my brother. So, really, the sections about his brother are the sections in the book I enjoyed the most and related to immensely. The rest of the book I found borderline irritating and frequently exhausting. Commentary layered on commentary layered on commentary wears me out sometimes. That said, I think many people would disagree with my opinion and have found a special place in their hearts for this book. I just personally enjoyed the maturity and style of What is the What much better. Enough hypocrisy. Must keep reading.
