A gorgeous edition of some of Newman's finest preaching. A classic example of Christian moral and biblical preaching by one of the finest minds of the 19th Century.

I really liked this different approach to memoir - funny, intriguing and relatable. Reading the book jacket and the acknowledgements and even the inside first page about how the book got written - all of it very clever and insightful. I'd like to have this woman as a friend!

So, I've been going back and forth between rating this as an "I liked it" or an "It was okay." I liked this book, but I also hated it, and I'm not sure I can articulate why. I think maybe it has something to do with my fear that if I were to ever write a book, it would probably turn out sounding a lot like this one. Maybe Eggers got too far into my brain, and it's not always fun reading your thoughts on a page. I think part of it is it sounded too "my generation" with it's MTV-postpostmodern-ADD-everything'srelevant-totallymeta tone. See, there I am doing it, writing just like Eggers. The thing that hooked me into reading the whole thing (other than the interesting premise of a memoiresque book about a guy who loses both his parents to cancer within a few months of each other) is that Eggers has a brother that's fourteenish years younger than he is. After his parents die, he ends up raising his brother, and so, much of the book describes his relationship with his brother. I related so much to those descriptions, since my brother's twelve years younger than me. Granted, my parents haven't died, but so many of the details (i.e. what it's like to try and teach a younger sibling the lyrics to a Journey song while riding with the windows down in the car) felt like they were lifted from a day in my life with my brother. So, really, the sections about his brother are the sections in the book I enjoyed the most and related to immensely. The rest of the book I found borderline irritating and frequently exhausting. Commentary layered on commentary layered on commentary wears me out sometimes. That said, I think many people would disagree with my opinion and have found a special place in their hearts for this book. I just personally enjoyed the maturity and style of What is the What much better. Enough hypocrisy. Must keep reading.

This book was provocative-- both to consider Chris McCandless and the nature of adventure, the way we go out in the world sometimes and make choices that can chance our lives, and to consider Jon Krakauer and how this story captured his imagination enough to recreate the journey Chris McCandless attempted.

Wonderful re-inventing of Oscar Wilde's classic 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' Set in hedonistic 1980/90's London and New York, this is the tale Wilde would have told if he'd been born in 1969. Dorian is the subject of a video installation by artist Baz Hallward, and as with the portrait in Wilde's original, the video image ages instead of arrogant, beautiful Dorian. Set against the AIDS epidemic as it is, a large proportion of the characters have contracted the diesese towards the close of the tale. However, although Dorian should have the diesese, and has in fact infected many others with it, he himself is as healthy and beautiful as he was when the video installation was made. Wonderful book, but I would recommend reading 'The Picture of....' before you read this.

Wow! What a beautiful story. Simply could not put it down. Loved the ending and still did not want it to stop. Looking forward to the movie.

It is an easy read, it gives an overview that is not bogged down by technical mumbo-jumbo that any layman that knows nothing about the environemt can read and comprehend. It giecs a realistic view on how we should look at the environment, not in terms of "global warming" but in terms ofbetter management.

This is a wonderful, pulsating book. Seems to harken back to the best of modernism; very influence by Virginia Woolf--probably why I like it so much! The descriptions are very powerful... the book grabbed me emotionally and would not let go.
