I didn’t really get into this book as much as I had hoped. I wrote on Maxine Hong-Kingston’s The Woman Warrior as my senior thesis so I am familiar with her work and style. Hong-Kingston weaves together myth and fact as she recounts the stories of Chinese male immigrants to the United States, from as early as the gold rush and railroad construction to the 1990s. The narratives are detailed, vivid and suggest a mythical historical memory. Her descriptions of the railroad construction by Chinese men and the confusion of the Communist revolution are particularly compelling, but some of the latter stories in the novel were less interesting.

I first read this in 1978 & dipped in again because my sister gave me its 'sequel' DR SLEEP for Xmas & I thought I might need a refresher. I was astounded by how much of it I had forgotten, largely because Kubrick's film version left so much out (& put so much in). I loved it at the time but, all these years later, it was a less compelling read. Disappointed.

I've said it before: I love Ian McEwan. While I preferred Atonement, this was nonetheless quite good and, as is often the case with McEwan's writing, was so very, very British. Though, it didn't have the same polish and perfection that I found in Atonement.

A true "fairy tale" in the classic, Brothers Grimm sense of the word (no Disney here!), filled with stark beauty and gritty violence. The author weaves the feel of an old-world European story into a more modern day America. I cared about both of the Henry Days, the Anniday kidnapped by the faeries and the ancient but newly reborn Henry Day who takes over his life. A few times I've looked over at my own darling child and said, "Maybe? Nah...." An engrossing book, even as it had me squirming in my seat a little!
