This series opens up with a mystery. Dawn Madison (former stuntwoman) returns to L.A. because the firm her father Frank works for (Limpet & Associates, a P.I. firm) has contacted her about her father's disappearance. He has been missing for over a week and Dawn decides to temporarily join up with Limpet & Associates to find him. She meets a techno-geek/weapons enthusiast named Breisi (pronounced Breezy) Montoya and a "little person" named Kiko Daniels who is an aspiring actor. Dawn meets her new boss "The Voice aka Jonah Limpet" the first night through a TV screen. She never sees his face, it's kinda Charlie's Angels. As they start following leads you learn about her movie star mother's apparent murder when Dawn was one month old. You also meet a new P.I. from a competing firm named Matt Lonigan who is also looking for Frank. There are so many strange events that occur that I couldn't even begin to review them all here. Dawn and her partners are investigating Frank's leads, this leads to the "Underground" where a group of strange vampires live. There is the Master, Dr. Eternity, his second in command, Sorin, and then there are three other types. There are the Elites who are usually former Hollywood stars that want another chance at stardom and don't want to grow old. There are the Groupies that serve the Elites, both sexually and with blood. Then there are the mindless Guards with iron fangs and extremely scalding saliva that they spit out. And finally, there are the human Servants who serve the Master "Above". It's definitely a lot to pick up in a first book, but there are also several things that I will have to continue reading to find out.

I recall not liking this book as much as the first, but after recently finishing the audio book, once again narrated by the fantastic Nathaniel Parker, I'm not sure why. Another grand adventure with Artemis, Butler, Root, Holly, Foaly, and Mulch, this time with the bonus introduction of crafty villain Opal Koboi. I literally laughed and cried. I can't wait to listen to the rest of the series.

Don't let the title turn you off! I never would have picked this up if it weren't for the fact that the local Stanford bookclub read this and unanimously loved it - so I had to give it a try to see for myself. Each section starts out talking about the baboons that Sapolsky studied for 20 years in Kenya and through his descriptions, it's clear how connected Sapolsky becomes to these animals who in their interactions often seem human. The rest of the book describes Sapolsky's life in Africa and his adventures with the neighboring Masai tribes, the gamewardens, local swindlers, etc. What makes this book great is Sapolsky's writing style - he writes with clear joy, excitement, and a fabulous sense of humor about these 20 years despite the fact that most were spent by himself with a troop of baboons.

A relatively easy read, and not too predictable. The plot was a little slow at times, and could be a bit unrealistic at times as well. Overall a good indulgence read.

I really liked the twist in this book. Good twists on werewolves and witches. Characters weren't whiney like you get in many YA books

This book was heavily recommended on the women's book circuit. And it's not a bad book. It was well written considering what alot of the "women's" lit is these days. But I didn't like it. I felt it was overly descriptive, abundent over-use of adjectives, and a wallowing in emotions. I'm a drama queen but I seriously felt like I should get my period reading this. Story is about a family who has twins, one of whom hs Down's Syndrome in the 1960s when that was very taboo. The father tells the mom the baby was born dead and sends the nurse to institutionalize the baby. The nurse instead runs away with the baby and raises her on her own. Meanwhile the original family has major dysfunction due to the lie/dead baby.
Like really excellent candy covered in razorblades and brain matter, Battle Royale is so horrifyingly delicious that I read it with something bordering on fervor. While I typically shy away from translations after a few wobbly experiences in the past, I flew through this murdery tome in record time and with real excitement. If you liked The Hunger Games trilogy, you will love the original kids-killing-kids-in-an-epic-government-controlled-bloodbath, Battle Royale. Check out the film adaptation as well - really good stuff!

I don't remember how I stumbled upon Julia Wertz's stuff, but I am so happy I did. Drinking at the Movies is a graphic novel about leaving the safety of home for the big bad wolf - New York. She is funny, self-deprecating and slightly awesome. Read it last night in an hour or so - the joy of graphic novels.

Great and underappreciated.
