I loved this book! I was kind of surprised at how much I enjoyed it, but I was excited by the new approach to the old classic, "The Wizard of Oz."

It is a thriller..but a different kind of a thriller. It is more in the likes of Umberto Eco. Hidden in the heart of the old city of Barcelona is the 'cemetery of lost books', a labyrinthine library of obscure and forgotten titles that have long gone out of print. To this library, a man brings his 10-year-old son Daniel one cold morning in 1945. Daniel is allowed to choose one book from the shelves and pulls out 'La Sombra del Viento' by Julian Carax. But as he grows up, several people seem inordinately interested in his find. Then, one night, as he is wandering the old streets once more, Daniel is approached by a figure who reminds him of a character from La Sombra del Viento, a character who turns out to be the devil. This man is tracking down every last copy of Carax's work in order to burn them. What begins as a case of literary curiosity turns into a race to find out the truth behind the life and death of Julian Carax and to save those he left behind. A page-turning exploration of obsession in literature and love, and the places that obsession can lead.

Wow, I think this is probably the funniest book on cadavers ever written. I liked the author's open attitude and humorous take on this gruesome, yet interesting, topic.

In the opening pages of this book, I thought it was a rich-kids-get-rid-of-the-nanny story. I couldn't have been more wrong. Sure, it features unruly kids (and their pet rats and spiders!), an ancient house, a hapless mother, a butler, and a nanny, but it also features a dragon, a yeti, a gargoyle, a talking spider with a penchant for lipstick, various wizardly gadgets and people with magical abilities (or lack of!). It's also got some hilarious family scenes, and a great chase to rescue their missing father that literally runs through the World Wide Web. And it's set in modern-day Scotland. Seriously, what is not to love about this book? It's so tongue-in-cheek.

a remarkable collection - clever and with heart. these stories are tricksy - structurally and linguistically fascinating - as soon as i think i know what they're doing they swerve and do something else. and the dialogue and beats are sensationally real/amusing (author's background in theatre comes through!). the title story and "nobody understands thorny when" are my favorites, but they're all strong.

Every year I read this book when summer officially hits. It's a tradition I've kept since high school, and my copy is so battered I should probably tape it together this year. Why do I reread it? This book has the same pace as summer: the fresh new beginning, the warmth of summer nights seeping into your room, the excitement of free time! The sharp yank back to fall preparation (I was fifteen when I first read this, yet I still was petrified of the Lonely One) matches how one does feel. A rug has been pulled underneath you, summer does not go on forever, and things aren't as sunny as they once were. There is still next year, and living for a new cycle and new experiences is enough.

This is about the Taiping Rebellion - how one man encountered Christianity, through a series of sickbed visions determined he was the son of God, and gained thousands of followers and eventually controlled a large region of China. While I was initially thrown off by Spence's use of the literary present, I eventually got into it. A lot of his focus is on Hong Xiuquan's inner circle of followers (all of whom were given majestic titles such as East King and Wing King) and the power plays between them. A primary tool used by them was claiming to be the voice of God or Jesus. I'm really fascinated by religions that see deity as something so immediate (a basic tenet of the Taiping was that God was corporeal).

Bu kitabı çok sevdim. Çok sessiz bir kitap ve hareketi buzul gibi tarif ediyorum. Bundan zevk aldım.
