So well done. Every one of Geraldine Brooks's books is so different from the others, and every one seems to have been thoroughly researched so that the reader learns a good bit while absorbing a piece of fiction. Living, as I do, near Martha's Vineyard, I was particularly fascinated by the depiction of the earliest English settlers and the Wampanoags who preceded them on the island.

It's well-written, but I just didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped (or as much as I had enjoyed Cross Bones, which is farther along in the series). I had two major complaints: first, it's a little heavy on the details and light on the action. Don't get me wrong - there is action, and there are parts where you really want to find out what happens next. But there were also a few places where she would describe something in detail that just didn't seem highly relevant to the story. And that's just my personal preference, but I'm not a visual person, and a book tends to lose me if it gets too flowery. And second - it was a bit too graphic and gruesome for me. I guess I should have expected this, but generally this character works with bones - not fresh corpses. And the brutality of the murders was just a bit too vivid and disturbing for me. But I'll probably try this author again, based on my impression of her later book.

I liked this book. It's tightly paced and has a lot of twists and turns. The author is deft at setting up without being overly wordy, which is hard to do in a novel when you're setting up an entire world and form of magic.

I dug this book! I took a class on the tragedies and this was part of the required reading and I am very happy it was. Although I was shocked by the reaction of 95% of the class, who found it so violent they couldn't read it. I on the other hand found the violence so outrageous it became comical. After watching the movie with Anthony Hopkins I was in awe of the talent it took to write something so creative. I have read so many books over the years and many of them I can't remember until someone starts talking about them, but I will NEVER forget Titus!

A novel that is, as usual, far superior to the film version (soundtrack of said film not withsanding). If you've only seen the movie, be prepared for a much darker novel without some of the convenient plot tie-ups mainstream cinema often creates. This is a great novel about both a literal coming of age and the emotional coming of age of a 30-something man (Hornby's primary subject matter). Wonderfully and realistically written. Hornby always manages to capture the fact that life isn't a neat little package and quite frequently sucks.

Ultimately a disappointment. I found the characters interesting but their interactions were too clever; it seemed contrived. The plotline was promising and intelligent, but the moral lesson in the end seemed less than fully relevant to the story as Russell laid it out. In other words, there was a clear moral, but it's a very simple moral, and we didn't need all the complexities of the science fiction story to make the moral clear. (The moral, without giving the ending away, is that sometimes bad things happen to good people, and that sometimes you get betrayed by the people you trust most.) The book is interesting and disturbing and intelligent, and it's worth reading, but in the end I felt like the author was a little too closely tied to some of the conventions of the genre.
