It doesn't quite come off, but until it falters in the last few chapters it's easily one of the best ghost stories I've ever read.

What fun to read a book as it was written in 1722. All the English usages that have gone out of use and had to be interpreted as best I could. The side effects of the plague were interesting, people seeing visions, proclaiming themselves as healers, false potions and money making schemes preying off of the poor sick people who were dying. The brave people who stayed behind to take care of the sick. The self-contentedness of the people not affected. It all rang true of people in general. I can see that the society back then was not very different from the way we are now. It's a very short book, just as I was getting bored, it was done, with half the book as explanations and footnotes that I didn't bother to read.

Overall, a great book. Individually, some of the stories are kind of funny and others are really funny, but they all appeal to that same McSweeney's brand of humor -- sort of dry, sort of silly, sort of simple, but very humorous. The lists were my favorite part.

Not at all what I expected. Which is to say I was pleasantly surprised. The story is slow to start, but I found myself really caring about the characters and their fates by the end.

I was good. Not as good as some I have read. The first story in this book was a lot better than the second I thought. Had a hard time getting into the second book.

This is a very angry book. Abbey is a true misanthrope, but that's not a bad thing. He's angry at the stupidity of the Western World and our callous attitude toward the environment. But at the risk of sounding crude, this is not a book for so-called "tree huggers" His environmentalism is predicated more on disgust for his fellow man than on a desire for a harmonious existence with nature. He respects the natural world because of the savage and unfeeling power that it contains and human desecration of it has more to do with our lack of awe than with an absence of green feelings.

I picked up this book knowing nothing about the writer nor the series; however, since this was #14 of this Sheriff Dan Rhodes series, I figured it must have something going for it. Sadly, this was not the case. I acknowledge that there is so much potential in the set-up [a house-bound cat turns up outside, indicating its owner's death may not be a simple accident], humorous interactions among the characters [the Sheriff trying to pass the cat off to just about everyone he meets, for example], and all those twists and turns before finally getting to the bottom of this small town Texas whodunit of a member of the Old Women's Literary Society (OWLS). However, the simplistic writing, short sentences and insipid characters ensured this potential remained unrealized. It was a painful read. Don't bother. (This was my review posted at FUN WITH DEAD TREES (r.i.p.))
