I read this back in junior high school about 100 years ago. What is not to love about lovable Bilbo Baggins and his adventures. I am glad so many later generations have loved this too.

I do love this first book in the series. I would be hard pressed to say how many times I've re-read it at this point, given that I think I re-read the series each time a new book came out. When I became sick with a cold and hit the inevitable second night where I couldn't sleep a wink, I dragged this out to reread until the Nyquil kicked in and made everything stop hurting so much. I just love the beginning of the story, love the discovery that Harry makes of being a wizard and what that means in terms of his abilities, knowledge, and way of relating to the world. I love watching him grow over the course of the books.

A well-crafted middle book that introduces my favorite character of the series, the incredibly queeny Denarra Syrene, whose dialogue is laugh-out-loud funny: "It's not at all unlike the time I got into a bit of trouble in this unpleasant little town in the Allied Wilderlands called Swampy Creek. An unfortunate misunderstanding involving a rather handsome and remarkably well-endowed spice merchant, his utterly unsympathetic wife--who was, i might add, both surprisingly agile and utterly impervious to reason--as well as a three-legged mule with an aversion to freshwater pearls." In additon to the hilarious bits, this book does an admirable job developing the relationships of the central characters further, and building the tension of the series--especially with its its cliff-hanger ending.

As always, Davidson kept the pages flying by for me. Good light reading.

The first time I heard about the book was in the movie "conspiracy theory" how in real life many famous assassin had this book in their possession, so naturally I was in a quest to read the book and figure out it's mind controlling powers. I was shocked how simple and dull was the book. I still can't figure out why this book is still required in many schools?
What a wonderful story from a favorite author. This book had many unexpected twists and turns that kept me wanting to keep turning the pages. The three generations of women going on a road trip from Seattle to FL was interesting from the beginning and a very different premise. I like that it resolved issues for Bethanne who we first met in A Good Yarn. Although some characters from other Blossom Street books appeared they mainly were just mentioned. A quick read. Highly recommended. If you have read her other Blossom Street books you should!

I had the pleasure of meeting the author last fall, and she's a delight. The book, happily, doesn't disappoint. It's a fast-paced thriller set in England at the beginning of a cholera epidemic, and as the main characters are a prostitute and a body snatcher, it has some gloriously seedy elements. The milieu will stick with you long after you've finished the story.

The parts about Fitzgerald are as close to absurdist as Hemingway ever gets. It isn't that he breaks his prose style, but that Fitzgerald is completely insane, and even punchy, declarative sentences can't corral him.
