So sad, yet so good!

This was a good ending to the story begun in Daughter of Fortune. Allende is wonderful at embedding her stories in accurate historical context which she did once again with Portrait in Sepia. Because of Allende's talents this book read like an autobiography/memoir rather than a mere novel. She was able to make the characters come truly alive so that I felt as if I were really reading Aurora's diaries/memoirs. The one disappointment: so much was left to the last 20-30 pages that I would like to have seen developed more----maybe that's for the next installment, making it a trilogy?

Winner of the Caldecott Medal and a New York Times Best Illustrated Book, The Polar Express is a charming story of a young boy’s adventure on Christmas Eve. Van Allsburg uses detailed illustrations and expressive language to bring this book to life. While waiting anxiously to hear Santa’s sleigh bells, a boy is surprised when a train arrives at his front door the night before Christmas. With the conductor as his guide and other children as passengers, the boy takes The Polar Express to the North Pole where he is greeted by Santa. The excited boy is chosen to receive the first gift of Christmas and one of Santa’s silver sleigh bells becomes his gift. On Christmas morning he is surprised to find the bell under the tree, after believing it was lost after falling out of his pocket. Only he and his sister can hear the bell ringing, because they believe in Santa; and the boy continues to hear the bell and feel the magic of Christmas long after he is grown. The Polar Express is a beautiful book and a classic Christmas story. Van Allsburg adds to the story by describing the emotions of the boy as he tells his story in first-person point of view. The author creates a picture of the boy’s experiences by writing, “From outside came the sounds of hissing steam and squeaking metal. I looked through my window and saw a train standing perfectly still in front of my house.” The lines “His teamed charged forward and climbed into the air” and “Santa circled once above us, then disappeared in the cold, dark polar sky” are examples of the high-quality text that accompanies the story’s amazing illustrations. Van Allsburg filled the pages of this book with oil paintings in warm colors and muted colors with light playing an additional role in the story’s artwork. Because the story takes place entirely at night, shadows, twinkling lights in building windows, and stars on the horizon bring depth to each page. A popular book and future motion picture, The Polar Express is a well-written and skillfully illustrated story that has become a staple in collections of holiday literature. Young children and adults alike will enjoy this wonderful winter story, which is just one of Van Allsburg’s excellent works.

Why is your elbow an hour? Eva Grace already the poet. I, too, know that crabapples are delicious (bleh). Another treasure from Mrs. Eleni.

Not my usual kind of book, but I am loving it!
The story itself was excellent, but there were some graphic sex scenes that I thought were uncalled for. The sex scenes were important to the story overall, but there was no need for them to border on X rated

I did not like this book at all. The main female character drove me crazy. I did not enjoy this book one bit!

I am not sure exactly what the goal was of the editors of this book. Unbuttoned talks a lot about the pains of breastfeeding, but was real light on the pleasures. Essentially, almost every essay boiled down to this: breastfeeding is OK, but don't do it for too long and if you don't want to, who cares, because it doesn't make much of a difference anyway. Huh? The only positive essays were the ones on weaning, towards the end of the book. Those made me laugh and made me a bit misty-eyed, because I know the day is coming soon when my son will wean himself. Besides that, this book only represented one very particular demographic: rich, white, educated women with flexible jobs and husbands who are also high earners. So if they can't make breastfeeding work, what hope is there for anyone else? I really wanted to love this book, and although there were parts that made me smile, overall it was not for anyone looking for a collection of positive essays on the breastfeeding experience.

3.5 Stars out of 5 I’m totally a sucker for paranormal books that have offbeat, hilarious, sarcastic and witty characters, so after I finished after How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf I just knew I had to read more about the Crescent clan of werewolves in The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf, the second book in the series. Maggie was a bit intimidating in the first book and frankly not very likable in the first book. However, I enjoyed Molly Harper’s writing, so I was interested in continuing with the series. Maggie has a lot going on as the pack alpha; taking care of the pack, the town, all the while keeping the pack a secret. Enter Dr. Nicolas Thatcher, a gorgeous geek who resembles a Viking god. Maggie’s attraction to him is instantaneous but for the good of the pack she tries to ignore the good doctor. Nick has come to the valley to investigate the recent wolf sightings and as he looks into the sightings, things begin to heat up between him and Maggie. Initially, I still didn’t connect with Maggie. She is prickly and short tempered and it was hard to feel connected to her, but slowly over the book I began to warm toward her. She is one of those characters that are hard on the outside and soft on the inside, but with Maggie’s case she had never really cracked open the shell. There are a couple of scenes that had me giggling out loud; the party makeover scene is hysterical. Overall, I enjoyed the romance between Nick and Maggie, along with the mystery the characters were involved with and would recommend for those that enjoy comedic romantic stories.

Inti dari buku ini sebenernya cuma satu, yakni ikhlas. Dan itu dirumuskan dengan 1/0 = unlimited. Tapi penuturannya bertele-tele, terlalu panjang, dan membosankan. Dua bintang saja.
