It took me a bit to get into it - I had to restart it a second time, which is unusual for me. Not as good as some of the others that I've read concerning this time period - and I've read a lot of historical fiction regarding henry VIII and his many wives and children and mistresses etc...

There were some parts in this book where I got a little bored, but the exciting parts definitely made up for it. I'm excited to read the final book in the series, because this one leaves you hanging big time at the end. I was really shocked by one thing in the book, which made it even better.

This book changed my expectations from and about community and society. If there are enough freaks, there won't be a need to conform - and oh MY! There are certainly enough freaks to go around. Seriously, I think the creative class is coming hot on the heels of the industrialized society - I only hope I live long enough to see it really affect the deep south.

I enjoyed "Becoming Naomi Leon" even more than "Esperanza Rising." Pam Munoz Ryan gets better and better at creating young female characters that resonate. This is ultimately a sweet story about family, yet it manages to have just enough suspense to keep you reading. The references to Mexican culture are well-integrated into the book and don't seem preachy or teachy, which so often happens in young adult lit.
