The book was very decent and deserves 3 1/2 stars. But the movie wasn't anything like the book. Added a war, changed the story...Anyway very decent book, but if you've seen the movie and are thinking of reading the book, you might be disappointed. Read the book.

Ana Gamda monan5275 — An extremely macroscopic look at human history. The essential argument is that various civilizations' destinies are determined more by geography and environment than by any innate characteristics of their people, and over the time frame that Diamond selects (many thousands of years), the logic is compelling. If you're reading it for pleasure, you'll get the gist of his ideas fairly early on, read through some interesting examples, then have to go through his defense against various inevitable objections ... and then more examples. By the time you finish you'll either be screaming "OK, I get it already!" or walking around looking for someone to debate ecological determinism with. Regardless of whether you agree or not, the read is well worth your time.

Not as good as some of the others that I've read concerning this time period - and I've read a lot of historical fiction regarding henry VIII and his many wives and children and mistresses etc...
