This is a very amusing hatchet job on Brando written by his bitter ex wife Ana Kashfi. Great accounts of madness on sets of Mutiny on the Bounty and One Eyed Jacks. Not very high browed stuff but worth a read if you are in a trashy dirt digging mood.

My Rating/Reviewing MO This is the first book in a series and it shows. It ends at kind of an awkward place. I wanted to pick up the next book right away but it is not available yet. If you like fantasy books that spend time showing you a new world, than you will like this book. I warn you though – this is not a light read. Another warning, you have to make it through the first half of the book before it really starts to get interesting. The first part is long and slow, though it does contain interesting descriptions of how magic works in the four part land. I would have preferred that this section be much shorter, and the last part more expanded so we could get to know the characters better. The last part of the book is very interesting and I will be reading the next book in the series when it comes out. Also, because this book is part of a a series I am going to withhold my final judgment until I read all the books. I prefer to judge a series as a whole. Tarranau gained an extra star for the potential I see in the series.

I found this book disappointing. It seemed to waffle on for ages, not achieving anything. Overall, I had the feeling after reading the book that it was much ado about nothing. My least favourite of the series.

The second book in the Song of Fire and Ice picks up right where the first one left off, continuing the stories of the characters we've come to care about and adding new ones on a regular basis. There's not a lot I can say about the plot without spoiling it for new readers, so I'll just say that Martin's gift for writing relatable characters and placing them in realistic danger shines just as brightly in this new book. Compared to the first entry, this novel is slow to pick up, and seems rather less focused. Still, there's plenty of fun to be had from the sweeping ambition of the plot and hints of supernatural elements that Martin keeps dropping.

“Wings” is one of those books that not only holds a fascinating premise but also captures you in a unique and interesting world. Aprilynne Pike has created a world where Laurel a 15 year old teenager learns more about herself than she would have ever wanted. Laurels is thrust into a magical world of fairies –and not your typical fairies either –and a world of wonder and amusement. Laurel’s story begins when she finds two odd nubs growing on her back getting bigger and bigger until they…pop to show wings. Yes, wings, but not any kind of wings but special sort of wings. To find out why they are special you should read the book but I can say that Pike takes a unique twist to the folklore. As a result Laurel is thrust into the secret and hidden world of fairies that coincidentally live in her old back yard. She is thus forced to make some tough choices, battle some evil ugly things, and become a heroine. Laurel is not one to be cowering from a fight but she cowers from her wings, ironically. The characters in my opinion are lacking. The most interesting character is Tamani who is mysterious, strong and a fairy. Nuff said. Laurel…. Though an interesting character and although an interesting faerie her character is one dimensional and whiney at times. Overall, the story seemed unbelievable and too simple. The teenagers were lacking the true teenager qualities and angst we see and know so well. Aprilynne has a good start to a series but it just misses the mark.
