It was a very quiet book; maybe because it was set in the Norwegian woods. Not a lot of action but interesting. It was chronologically confusing but I liked it that way. The author gave you little bits of information all along so that you could piece the story together.

Many of you may have already heard of the famous Madam Tussaud and her wax exhibits. But did any of you realize the part her ancestors played in the French revolution? It is both skin-crawling horrifying and chin-tapping fascinating. Although I have read historical novels on the French revolution before, I always forget just how gruesome the recount is. The citizens of France had become mindless, paranoid, bloodthirsty monsters! Such gory descriptions could be used for a book on zombies. Although the uprising was initiated because of the people’s anger towards the royals, eventually, citizens were killing just for the sake of killing. If you aren’t a patriot – Off With Your Head! Are you related to a traitor? To the Guillotine! Do you like the color black? Death to Your Whole Family! Despite the gut-wrenching horror, the great thing about historical fiction is that it can suck readers in, making them feel empathy for the lives of those who lived through such turning events in history. The awful thing about these novels is that they pull me in too much; often making me feel sick at images of mobs hanging and beheading their supposed adversaries. I had to stifle my sobs in the office at the revelation of some undeserved deaths, and there are plenty, but sometimes it is just so overwhelming. Luckily, with over four hundred pages, I eventually got used to all of the killings. No, I am not heartless, but I began to feel like Marie – numbed from all of the death and panic enveloping the country. I knew it was a part of history, but I just kept asking myself, “When does the killing stop?” Though I may appear to be venting about all of the sadness and brutality in this book, I highly recommend it to anyone interested in historical fiction. However, I am compelled to warn those with a weak heart or stomach. It is an excellent depiction of the French revolution, keeping as a fast-paced read since it is so easy to get invested in the characters. But, keep in mind that there will be heart-ache. It is the French revolution. What else did you expect?

Wonderful story that I wouldn't have known about had it not been for friends on Goodreads. Utterly charming.

Except for "The Bad Beginning," I do not own any of the Lemony Snicket books. I read all thirteen volumes at various bookstores in the U.S. and in Europe, while waiting for trains or planes. This ending was perfect.(Children's Lit)

What turns people off about this book is the character of Holden - his self-centered, anti-social and skewed outlook. It helps to know that Holden is the ultimate unreliable narrator, in that most of what he says on his journey home is part of his veneer of cynicism, a mask that slips only occasionally throughout the novel. To me this is authentic. Teenagers learn quickly what roles they need to play to be accepted, and Holden hasn't learned this even though he wants acceptance. He feels affectionate towards others but has trouble showing it. His affluent life has left him spiritually hollow. HC is extremely flawed, but his touching relationship with Phoebe is what forms the emotional center of the novel - the one time when he lets his guard down. I get a little misty every time I read this.

Great book - excellent writing and a good (but often sad) story.

Interesting premise: trying to find common experiential, psychological traits among creative types in a variety of fields. Boring execution: typical clinical psycho-babble. I almost finished the book, but my interest trailed off.

Despite my initial reluctance to pick up where I left off by reading a new translation, I was very relieved to find out that the new version is actually very good. I'm planning to read the next volume in the new translation as well, but I'll finish off the remaining two with the good old Moncrieff version. In addition to having some wonderfully amusing scenes and commentary about the society and salons of the narrator's Paris, this volume also contained a couple of my favorite sections I've encountered, including the narrator's attempts to communicate with his grandmother using the telephone, and the amazingly rendered sequence leading up to his grandmother's death.

Great book! The 'pray' section was by far my favorite part of the book.
