Ellis, Julia, and Dorie have been best friends since grade school. Now, in their mid-thirties, they're at a time of making new decisions in their lives. Ellis has been downsized from her banking job; Julia finds her modeling jobs getting fewer and the life style not as fun; Dorie has had a shocking betrayal in her marriage. To reconnect with each other and to rest and relax, they all rent a rambling old beach house on North Carolina's Outer Banks for the month of August. There is also an intriguing landlord and a woman on the run. "Summer Rental" is a wonderful story of friendship, change, and acceptance. The descriptions are great and the love story is fun and sweet. It is a wonderful book to read at the beach or curled up on a cold, rainy day - in other words entertaining at any time.

As per usual I loved thisnovel by Allende...I always wish she was as prolific as say heinlein so I could read her every day for months. Unfortunately I consume a book this size in a day or three. Still, this was one of those I digested relatively slowly in order to savor. Thank you again Isabel for creating another strong female character for me to be proud to know.

Read for senior center book club. Didn't quite live up to the hype for me, and I really enjoyed one story but found the other rather dry.

This book is awesome! I could not put it down and flew through it in a few days. This book follows Strike, a round-the-clock New Jersey drug dealer, and Rocco Klein, a burnt out homicide detective that is convinced Strike is the killer in a murder case he is investigating. Spike Lee adapted this into a great movie, though he relocates the story to Brooklyn and spends no time developing Klein's character. The book [as usual] is better. The author gives equal time to the dealers and the cops, painting a vivid and intimate portrait of each. Highly recommended; will keep you in suspense.

I had a difficult time caring about the characters. While they seemed authentic, I did not like any of them, so it was hard to be invested in the story. It sort of bogged down after 100 or so pages. Disappointing.

I eventually gave up on getting through this book. The translation was too bad. It started to irritate me so much, I wasn't focused on the story at all anymore. I think it's such an insult to the authors hard work to hire bad translators. It's not as if there aren't plenty of them out there. Anyway, this makes it very hard to say anything about the book, really. Except that if you're holding the Norwegian translation for this, do yourself a favor and don't read it until you've had a drink. You'll need it.
