The vision of heaven articulated in this book is powerfully attractive to me. Not only does it provide something to look forward to (in the way that a hazy clouds-and-bunnies picture cannot), but it also dignifies life in this world, the very world that is to be renewed and restored. I especially appreciated learning about the connection between the destroying fire of II Peter and the refiner's fire of Malachi, and how the inscription on the Roman denarius illuminates Jesus' instructions to "give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's." I hope this book will provide fresh insights to those that haven't given heaven much thought.

Oh dear me I am so hooked! And I didn't realise until I was half way through that books 2 & 3 aren't published yet!!!! Argh!! But Patrick Rothfuss' blog is helping in the meantime! Love the character, love the intrigue. It's going to be a long & painful wait for the rest of the story.

I don’t know what prompted me to read this book but I did. Yes, she’s funny, not laugh out loud funny but funny nonetheless. Entertaining, sure. Would I recommend it to a friend, I don’t think so.

I really enjoyed reading this book, even though I felt no direct connection to Margo or any other character in the story. That said, I did like the connections between Margo and the various characters in the story, especially those who made up her surrogate family. i would recommend this to anyone looking for a great read.

Before, Laurel had a family. She had a mom and dad who she loved and a little brother that annoyed her. She had friends and a normal life. After, Laurel was alone. In one disastrous night, Laurel lost her family and David, her childhood friend and neighbor, lost his mother. The driver, David’s father is in coma that he might never wake from and everyone blames him for the accident. Now, Laurel has to learn to live without her family and has to learn to heal. I was hesitant about reading The Beginning of After because I wasn’t sure how much I was going to enjoy a book that is about sadness and loss, but I am glad that I gave it a shot. The Beginning of After is about healing and becoming whole again after your entire life crumbles in a matter of seconds. Laurel’s story didn’t sadden me as much as David’s did. David never had time for his family and was basically a pain in the ass to his parents. His dad was always a jerk to him, and he took that anger out by smoking, drinking and giving his parents attitude. Now his mom is dead and his dad might never wake up. Where Laurel had her grandmother, David was truly alone. He dropped out of school and left his childhood home, not really having any other place to go. He and Laurel bonded over their mutual tragedies, but I was hoping for a little more between the two. My main issue with The Beginning of After was the characters. I should have had more sympathy for Laurel, but I didn’t. It almost felt like the feelings of Laurel and David were just glossed over. That isn’t to say that I thought the writing was bad, because it wasn’t. I think I was just expecting a little more from them. I thought the ending was beautiful. It shows that you can move on from a tragedy, even if you think you can’t. Even if you don’t think you are strong enough, you are. Overall, I really enjoyed The Beginning of After. It wasn’t as dark or depressing as I thought it was going to be, and I think that is why I enjoyed it so much. I look forward to reading more books from the very talented Jennifer Castle! I just want to also point out that I think the cover is gorgeous! I love it, and it is what first drew me to the book!

To me, this novel was a levelheaded take on teenage friendships and the outside pressures that often determine their course. And while I can see how some may label this book "Christian Lit," I think to do so would be a mistake. Yes, the premise has a religious drive, and yes, the protagonist, Tabitha, is devout. But the discussion of belief was so unique, refreshing, and most importantly to me, two-sided, that it became part of the character's growth rather than A Message. Other nice things: Jake is a dreamboat, the portrayal of the rollercoaster relationships of teenage girls was spot on, and I want to have dinner with Tab's (seemingly agnostic) parents. It was also a treat to recognize the Decatur and Atlanta locations throughout. Downside: The few times characters said "The Ultimate" all I could think about was Wet Hot American Summer. A source of inspiration, perhaps?

Mary Hogan's new teen novel, The Serious Kiss, proves you can't judge a book by its title or its cover.the protagonist, Libby Madrigal, experiences her first totally real, sincere, love-filled, mind-blowing, serious kiss. After all, she and her best friend, Nadine, longed to experience the "big IT, the IT supreme: Love." To that end, they made a pact at the beginning of their freshman year to each obtain one serious kiss. Though you would imagine it being a cute tale about a young girl's first kiss, it actually has great deep meaning. We see this in the first paragraph as Hogan introduces that Libby's parents have real problems. Her dad drinks too much and her mom eats too much. It a great expirience to anyone and I recoomend it to any one who enjoys a good read.
