To Anyone that is a Boss, Has a Boss, or Will be a Boss, Please read this book. There are some very critical passages about communication between the ranks, that you really need to understand. I know. It's a book about Checklists, but, the Checklists are designed to cause/create communication. Checklists are great. Communication is great. Having a bit of both, well, that's just a winning combination! I thought this was an excellent book. While it seems simple, I really appreciated the stories behind early checklists, and checklists at many levels of complexity and in various kinds of work.

I was delightfully surprised by the spiritual aspects of this book. I especially liked that Pi wanted both a Christian baptism and a Muslim prayer rug. I found it very engaging and it was difficult to put down. I did not care for the ending that took the story out of Pi's capable hands. It felt tacked on.

Mirande reports on his sociological study about what it means to be "macho" and what it means to be "a real man" for a sample of Mexican men living in California and Texas. He concludes that masculinity is NOT a universal trait and that the concept of masculinity varies by context. So, his point is that there are, in fact, MANY masculinities in any given culture -- in this case, Latino culture. He also explores the various positive and negative perceptions of "macho". There are some problems with this study, and I would like to see the research done again but with more open-ended questions, interviews with men AND women, interviews conducted BY men and women.... etc. But, overall, I feel that Mirande accomplished a lot in this study of really beginning to understand the complexities of "machismo" and masculinity (and, consequently, femininity, although he doesn't get into this at all). I definitely recommend this book to anyone who knows a man ("un hombre"). :) Therefore.... everyone. It's a good start for important conversations.

(Spoilers) First of all, I saw the movie way before I ever read this book. Wow, nothing alike. I thought it was a good story, but far too slow. I loved seeing the results and hallucinations of Gull's plunge into insanity, but really, did there need to be a whole chapter on his rambling of the significance of several geographical points in London and why we cannot live in a female-dominated society, blah blah blah? Do I understand the point that Moore was trying to make? Yes. Do I necessarily like the way Gull's "philosophy" is laid out for the reader? Not particularly. I thought it could have been far more succinct. The novel lost some steam at the end after the death of the last victim.
