Well I loved this bood as I have love all of Robin Hobb's previous books. The character of Fitz has grown, and importantly the character of the Fool, my favourite character, and responsible for the re-emergence of my obsession with fools and jesters, has developed too and here we see other facets of him not previously seen. I'm really looking forward to Fool's Fate.

I love this book so much. It's so depressing and sexy and foul and totally engrossing. I rarely read books and go, "Goddamn, why can't I meet someone who will dress me in boys underpants, make me pack a cock and then bitchslap me around?" I guess I'm probably missing the point of this nuanced look at a self destructive romance.

Part of the reason I admire Stephen King so much is not because of his cool stories or his good writing, but because of his dedication to and appreciation of the art of storytelling. This book is not only a memoir and an excellent "how-to" guide to writing, but an exploration of the themes and ideas that drive his creative process. I found that insight helped me understand King's writing even more, from his short stories to his cryptic comments in interviews. A must-read for any real fan or aspiring popular fiction writer.

I generally dislike this book. Not to be a book snob, but I thought the literary cliff-hanger tricks Brown used displayed a rather shallow writing style. Basically I can sum it up as "Decent plot, bad writing."
