OK, I'm in. I do think the rhymes work, and I like the break in rhyme and meter each time when you get to "Superhero Underpants." I enjoyed the idea that Charlie did in fact run across laundry from the line all over the world, and since I was expecting a yak, the Yeti surprised a giggle out of me. What I also liked: the twist ending that Charlie REALLY IS a superhero, and once he had his underpants, he could fly all the way home.

Dan Brown is down there with Clive Cussler and Dean Koontz in terms of people whose book are at best good for numbing your brain during a four-hour airplane flight. Convenient plot twists, generic characters, and sinister conspiracies abound. I encountered the whole "Maybe if Jesus was real and he was a man and a Jew in the early days of the first millenium, maybe, just maybe, he felt like being, well, a normal Jewish man and getting married, and having relations, and maybe having kids, and hell, maybe he has some brothers and sisters like many normal people, and well, maybe this whole Bible-story Jesus is kind of like the character Uncle Sam, who we've got pictures of and allegories for and such and such and hey! whaddya know, isn't freakin' real at all." And that came in a Catholic high school. So no, the subject matter was old-news and I don't care about the avalanche of 'controversy' this 'novel' set off because goddamn! only someone who hand't bothered to ponder the possibility of Jesus' humanity in the first place, be they Christian or otherwise, would be so much as budged. Did I mention this novel was poorly written?

the begining gave me hope, and the end left me bitter. the 13 clocks started off well, then meandered every which way. there was no real character development. it was supposed to be philosophical, but i found it convoluted. the author imployed too many tortuous windings and improbable circumstances to get everything to work out. the end was rather obvious but still a bit vague. and the occasional rhyming annoyed me.

I will quote James Gould Cozzens here on F. Scott Fitzgerald gift for writing: " a talent for saying not merely the right, the apt, the vivid, or moving thing, but the thing which, having all those qualities, so far transcends your reasonable expectation that you see that it couldn't have been done merely by intelligence, or training, or hard trying, and must simply have been born in a sort of triumphant flash outside the ordinary process of thought".

It's like a Jane Austen... but American... and shorter... and darker.

I love this book. I loved teaching this book. I learned more about God and the state of modern humankind from this book than anything else I've read. I don't know why. I think it was an essay I read and some connections between Paradise Lost, Prometheus and Prometheus Bound. It is fascinating.

This book won a Bancroft, and for good reason--it offers a complex analysis of the economic, cultural, and ecological factors that contributed to one of the country's worst natural disasters while remaining an enjoyable, readable history. By far the best environmental history book I've read, Worster weaves enough social history into the narrative to illustrate the complicated relationship Americans have had with their land. He takes a critical yet understanding view of the plainsmen and places them firmly within the context of capitalist culture, which makes for a compelling argument.

I listen to Prairie Home Companion and love to hear Keillor speak. This story reminded me of my own small town and what it was like to grow up there.
