Way too much of the storyline was unbelivable.

This is a genuinely original, imaginative and ambitious novel which Donoghue pulls off brilliantly. The subject matter could easily have led to a book which was sensationalist or merely depressing. The author has captured the relationship between a child and mother so well that, regardless of the situation, everything about it rings absolutely true. Read it, enjoy it, recommend it to everybody you meet. It really is that good!!

It was more graphic and violent than I thought it would be. Dickens writes the best characters I've ever read. Even the minor characters have personalities and flaws. Oliver Twist was a social satire criticizes Victorian England. Some of his criticisms of society could still apply today. August Rush, the movie, was a great retelling of Oliver Twist and now that I've read it, I can see even more similarities. Oliver Twist was not really a page turner, but it was the easiest novel of his that I've read yet. The ending felt a little contrived to me. I can see why this novel was shocking at the time it was published. Dickens sheds light on things that people just didn't like talking about back then. Dickens has this way or narrating that makes you feel so connected to the characters and makes you care about them a lot. This book is also reviewed on my blog Books: A true story

Each story left me breathless. I'd stop, sit back, and just live in the experience of that story. Whether it was the waters of Amsterdam, or the mountains of Poland, each story brings you in, holds you tight, and the entire time you know your heart is going to be broken by the end. But you have no choice but to read on, because isn't it better to... Well-written, and thoroughly human.

This novel follows the stories of three doctors, and how they were able to overcome the harsh life of living in the ghetto, and the various pressures society placed on them, to eventually go to college, succeed in medical school, and become renowned doctors. I found The Pact (which I actually still have two chapters left to read) to be quite provocative, as it poses the question of what can and should be done to encourage low income young black males to break out of the cycle of poverty and violence to pursue a college education and a decent job. As a middle class white girl I really didn’t know much about the troubles of lower class young black men, and found this novel to be eye opening. I recommend it to anyone wanting to look through someone else’s eyes, and also anyone interested in making the world a better place. As a side note, I learned of this book after hearing the Three Doctors speak at a recent event.

This book was one of my biggest fears as a parent. It seems weird to say I liked it because it was such a tough topic. I thought it was well written and I really sensed the struggle, fear, and desperation of Nick's father. It's interesting though how you can read someone's experience with drug addiction and still have NO CLUE what you would do if it was your own child. I would like to read Nick's book about the same experience and see what new light it sheds.

This story was okay, nothing special...southern town with 30 somethings figuring out their lives. Classes mix and friendship and love bloom...

Augustin Burroughs tries to be David Sedaris and, in my opinion, fails. This book was mostly just terrifying, horrifying, and just plain sad. Also, the author gets very graphic regarding his homosexual relationship at 13 with a man 20 years his senior. I would never suggest this book to anyone.
