Fake-up Fake-up _ake_p — The slow build almost took my attention span away from this book. I had high hopes for Rune and Carling's paring, given the effect Carling has on Rune in Storm's Heart, but once I'd reached the end, I didn't feel as fulfilled as I'd hoped. Rune has promised a service to Carling. They strike a bargain in Storm's Heart, though Rune is not sure what exactly Carling wants him to do for her. He knows what he'd like to do. Carling is a vampyre who has come to accept her time is soon ending. She's brought Rune to San Francisco, yet she's not exactly sure why. With Rune's presence, however, she feels something she hasn't felt in a long time: the will to live. Given the explosive sexual tension between the leads of the previous books, I expected Rune and Carling to be off the charts. Their passion felt a little ho-hum. There were also some plot threads left hanging which I assume will be revisited in future books, so the sense of finite closure for this book wasn't present. That being said, I cannot wait for Oracle's Moon (March 2012), and I'm interested to keep up with the characters we've been introduced to thus far.

Maria Fernanda mfchavarria — I like Victoria Alexander as an author. She has a clean writing style. Her plots are well-constructed, her dialogue is always well-done and she knows her time period and history. Here's the problem I have with this book. I simply never liked Felicity. My sympathy was always with Nigel. Yes, he had a lot of control over his own behavior and the scene in which they find themselves in the middle of the book is mostly his fault, but I can't abide a heroine who picks her hero for no apparent reason, puts her head down and just chases. There's nothing likable about Felicity and even at the end, when Nigel threw up his hands and decided that he loved her, I actually felt sorrier for him. And the even sadder thing about the story? For all the sympathy I felt for Nigel? I didn't like him either. So with two pathetic leads, all I'm left with distaste.

Gaurav Raj graj6683ab6 — It seems appropriate to be writing my review of this book while not quite in my right mind. I can't blame my state of mind on any of the drugs mentioned in the book; mine is just from a migraine. I've hallucinated twice, once when my mother gave me Dramamine in case I'd get sea sick on a whale watching trip (I've never gotten sea sick) and once when on Vicadin after Sean was born (I immediately stopped taking it after that). I've never gotten drunk to the point of losing control of myself or needing to vomit (I don't like how alcohol makes my head feel) and I've tried any other drugs. Despite being the completely wrong demographic for this book, I enjoyed it! Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas reminds me most of Catcher in the Rye in that both are stream of consciousness adolescent rants fueled by drugs and alcohol. I did most of my reading of Fear and Loathing while Ian played Grand Theft Auto: Vice Cityand the video game compliments the book well. The only problem: I ended up picturing Thompson and his lawyer like the main character and his lawyer in the game. My favorite parts of the book was the drive to Las Vegas and the bar scene in Circus-Circus. I loved the description of the scared hitchhiker who was unfortunate enough to get picked up by two guys tripping on just about everything while driving at break-neck speed to Vegas. Having been to Circus-Circus, I laughed at his description of the circus antics happening overhead of the gamblers and drinkers. I don't know what possessed anyone to build a place that looks like a demented version of a childhood fantasy and then turn it into a casino.
