Melissa Whitman jmpstart — Jill is a sixteen year old competitive fencer who is mourning her last lost match while on vacation with the family. She falls out of a tourist boat and ends up back in time with a pirate crew. She gets to use her fencing skills for real while trying to figure out a way home. This is a young adult book that reads appropriately for that age. Vaughn does a good job of explaining piracy, sailing and fencing within her story but it was a bit immature for me.

Abilkhair Kozhayev _teil — A Season to be SinfulA Season to be Sinful was published not long after the Compass Club series and there are so many similarities and patterns here that I hesitate to give this an "A" rating just on the basis of standardization alone. If I had read this book first though, I would have completely loved it. Some of the standby Goodman elements are here and luckily the ones I tend to like. Sherry is a fitting hero in that he's handsome, wealthy, smart, and compassionate to children and women, all the while hiding a dark past that makes him decidedly enigmatic. He does what Goodman's best heroes do, which is to provide comfort, protection and assistance to his beleaguered woman, and all without overstepping her rights to defend herself and her independence. Once Sherry and Lily really come together they are a dynamic force. Lily is a victim of sexual abuse, like many of Goodman's heroines, but she's also not completely victimized by the past and always focuses on her own survival as well as caring for others in need. I had some brief qualms about Lily's ability to push past the effects of sexual violence so quickly once she fell in love, but I didn't allow those to stop me from enjoying the romance here. I also had some reservations about the sheer ubiquity of the villain in that he's everywhere and involved in so many various plots, not to mention so over-the-top dastardly. How is it possible for one man to have his hand in everyone's backstory? After some eye rolling, I decided to let that go as well. Still, Lily & Sherry are among my favorite Goodman characters, and this is a compelling read.

Marco Clemenza marcoclemenza — The Dinosaur Games has an interesting and rather unique story concept and plot which reminded me of animation series from the 1980′s. There were plenty of Saturday morning cartoons with story lines featuring good vs. evil in fantasy worlds or fictional settings. In this case, it’s young people forced to battle dinosaurs directed by diabolical people with a secret, nefarious plan to perhaps rule the world, or at least their part of it. Think “Dungeons & Dragons” with dinosaurs set in an alternative or futuristic Texas. There’s lots of action and a fast moving pace, with terms and phrasing that young adults would identify with, and the author obviously has a strong idea and direction in which they wish to take this series. For me, the drawback was structuring and style, as the narrative is almost entirely in present tense, a screenplay-like mode. We always being told or described scenes and events with no transitions, and this came off as rather disjointed. If you read the description, it reflects “The Dinosaur Games” style. As I had an ARC copy, perhaps paragraph structure and formatting is different in the official released edition. Overall a unique premise, but I would be curious if the same style continues in Book 2 “The Revenge of the Gladiator,” which has recently been released.
