Emecien Design emecien — I don't feel really worthy to review this book. It's Ulysses. It's one of the greatest modern novels in the English language. It's a love letter to it and a history of it and has a sick, twisted relationship with it's readers and has actually driven people to a lifetime of studying just a few chapters of it. I know I missed a thousand things in every ten pages I read, and if I went back again, I'd see things completely differently. And nonetheless, I did read it, and I feel the need to mark that down because it was an accomplishment for me. And it was deeply beautiful in many parts. James Joyce was capable of prose that will bring tears to your eyes. Perhaps it's about a repulsive subject, or a funny one, but you'll find yourself hugging the book to you as much as throwing it across the room. Or at least, I did. People often grow attached to particular chapters in this book, since it is so large. It is easier to connect with just one particular vignette of the day. The chapters can largely stand on their own, with some plot threads as background. My personal favorite was "Scylla and Charybdis," based off an episode in the Odyssey where Odysseus has to choose between him and all his crew going down in a black hole in the sea, or a sea monster that will eat most of his crew, but leave Odysseus alive to continue his journey. They spend it in a library, talking about theories of Hamlet and Shakespeare, while one of the main characters (Stephen Daedalus, for those of you who have read Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man) fights with himself inwardly. It's so beautiful, and in a novel of obscurity, introducing Shakespeare was my way of seeing the message. I have to say, though, for all it's complexity, the message is as Hallmark as you can get. Love, love, love, baby.

Wafik Hammami wafikhamma3df4 — This was a fantastic book that actually challenged me to READ the words because it was a vocabulary I was completely unfamiliar with. That being said, the language gripped you and made you WANT to figure out what was there and what all the sea-going descriptors meant. I found myself constantly trying to form the mental image of what they were describing and since Maturin's character was new to seafaring, there is a lot of explanatory text to help us newbies along the way. I definitely look forward to reading the second book!

Zviadi Chanturia zviadiko — The book as a whole is a quick, interesting read. It covers the discovery and acceptance of the theory that cholera is waterbourne and seeks to link that to infrastructure changes in London in the mid-19th century, specifically the development of a sewer system. Johnson's problems are three-fold. Stylistically, he's repetitive. Whole paragraphs could have easily been condensed into single sentences and certain portions of the book paraphrase earlier sections. He also spends too much time telling you what he's writing about rather than just writing about it. And his thesis is either unclear or extremely tenuous. He seems to want to argue that the development of London's sewers was due to the waterbourne theory of cholera. But the case he makes is more one of coincidence than cause, particularly as he himself narrates how the sewer system was largely in place before most people came around to the waterbourne theory. In sum, fascinating, but not quite what it claims to be.

Thanyaporn Phiboon sutsaiparn — Great friends to lovers story. Evan and Kelsey's story has plenty of life's twists & turns; eventually their true feelings come out and they are both overwhelmed by the incredible passion they have together. In the end, the wait was more than worth it.

Thomas Palmer palmer31je6936 — This is a wonderful story (based on the life of the author's grandmother) about a girl who grows up wealthy in Mexico, but due to unfortunate circumstances must come to America and work as a field laborer. The writing was simple but sweet.
