Ryan Jeon ryanjeon — Questions I'm left with at the end of this book: 1. What was the "lesson" before dying? Nothing was moving enough to make any impression on me. I vaguely got the "stand tall" message, but was that it? 2. Jefferson was sentenced because he was determined guilty of killing a nice shop owner and his two friends. Where were their families throughout the story? Why weren't they involved AT ALL? We never heard anything about Bear or Brother or Mr.Grope, shouldn't their families and friends played some sort of role in this story? It's like the author entirely forgot about them. 3. What was the point of the author's secondary message, about staying vs. leaving? What was the final message? I feel that it didn't relate at all the Jefferson's storyline. 4. Wouldn't that bar fight have made some sort of press? It would have been a more interesting twist if the bar fight led to the sheriff discontinuing visits to Jefferson, and Grant being forced to see himself falling into the same traps as his fellow classmates (he states that many people he grew up with died in fights). 5. Why was Jefferson SO DUMB? I found it completely unnecessary-he was too simple and lacked dimension. There are more artful ways of portraying uneducated people that are still intelligent (Grapes of Wrath, Salvage the Bones). 6. Why was Grant so mean to his students?

Sukiyama Sagara sukiyama — I really enjoyed this book! Typically I'm not a fan of of second books (especially ones that end with cliff hangers) but this one was great. I enjoyed it more than Hex Hall. I really like the character of Sophie, she is sarcastic and vulnerable without being cliche and I think that makes this series so great. This book asks a lot more questions than it answers and ends with a pretty significant cliffhanger so I am definitely looking forward to the next book!

Steeven Zeiss _ersonal_iew — This book was awesome. Loved all the different turn of events, and I was so happy Claire went back....I was so emotional through certain parts that I would become choked up and sad. Had many a late nights reading this book, and i can't wait till start the next one.

Johannes Blanck fishnchips — this book pulls me in two directions. first, i want to believe we can be the change we wish to see in the world - and gladwell breaks down and labels people and ideas that have done just that - by starting trends or spreading a message. unfortunately, that means one person can begin a suicide epidemic in a tiny island nation or that paul revere can spread news faster than another galloping messenger on that same night. not everyone has the ability to spread the message as effectively and deviant behavior is catching as well. second, gladwell's approach to these issues is always drawn from very dry sources, scientific studies and corporate marketing campaigns. by the end of the book, when he was breaking down how to fight cigarette smoking, I was tired of data and moneymakers. Can everything be neatly categorized and declared a rule? God, I hope not. I found myself less inspired as the book went on, which I didn't expect. the writing was missing the human side of smoking, and smokers and adoption and nurture - science cannot answer everything about being human and tidwell is very scientific and data oriented in his approach. Do we each contain the power to create change and communicate to a larger audience? I got the feeling from this book the answer is no - not equally.

Francine Francine francinecardoso — Very easy, fast nonfiction read. Good story, but really simple.

Wong Ho _hristiewong_hw — I only had 3 days to read the book, and I managed to chapter 12 before going to see the movie with my friend. So when I got home to finish the book it was annoying that I knew what was going to happen. Nonetheless, it was a wonderful read. I became quite attached to the characters particularly Emma, as I identified with her. I felt frustrated and heartbroken for them; for all the 'what ifs' 'if onlys' and all the inbetween. I was even seething at 'fate' and all that mumbo-jumbo. Kind of want to punch David Nicholls though! 'WHY!!!!?' (sob sob)

Fernando Almada fsalmada — Great story about breaking the boundries of race and just doing what you think is right and being friends with anyone and everybody no matter what race, age, or color.
