susanharjoc51c
Susan Harjo susanharjoc51c — Karen mentiioned wanting prose that puts its arms around you, well, this prose grabs you and takes you right into Dostoevsky's world. His strength in recreating actual dialogue -- and changing the styles of speaking of different characters -- plays the largest role in absorbing the reader. At least that's it for me. Not that the secriptive language is wanting in any way. It's not. But this is a spoken novel. The Pevear and Volokhonsky translation is especially fine with the dialgogue. Instead of just translating the sense of what each character says, they translate the tone of voice, the verbal idiosycnracies. For instance, when Roghozin, a perpetually dissatisfied, but sadly-in-love-with-the-wrong-girl guy, kvetches to the Prince (who is called the Idiot, but isn't an idiot) "She gave her maid Katya a scarf of mine that, even if she lived in luxury, she never maybe saw the like." I can hear this guy' kvetching when he says that, especially from that misplaced maybe and the emphatic even if she lived in luxury (or how about, "It's a strange riddle for me why she's marrying you" This slightly non-idiomatic English isn't seen elsewhere in the writing. That is, P & V write impeccable English, but kow when not to be impeccable. The dialogue throughout sounds exactly like my Russian speaking family's kvetching, declaiming, arguing, discussing all of the time. Beware. That's what Doestoevsky's Russians do. And the unlikeliest people suddenly start explaining themselves, their thoughts, their motivations, and others listen. So do I. I love it. I'll read it again, I know. Incidentally, Dostoevsky had a big influence on the early 20th century novelists like Joyce and Woolf and you can see why in this novel.

lorainekav
Loraine Kavrokov lorainekav — This has topped the list of my favorite books of all time. A beautiful story of redemption, forgiveness, justice, friendship, and a heartbreaking father & son relationship. This book made me cry. The author's use of language is eloquent and strong... taking the reader in with its vivid imagery and wonderful storytelling.

eahenrique5fe8
Eduardo Henriquez eahenrique5fe8 — This is pretty similar to Only Forward, Smith's first novel, except that this one doesn't descend into tedious drivel halfway through... Both feature a very interesting setting and a street-smart but self-depracating male protagonist who knows how to handle himself as a result of a somewhat shady past and who embarks mostly unwillingly on a mission that involves wise-cracking, shooting and often jammily stumbling through a series of encounters with quirky people in odd locations. Both hence have the same generally entertaining but occasionally irritating informal narrative style, which isn't quite as endearing or as funny as it wants to be but is for the most part enjoyable. Both also feature a kind-of secondary, paranormal dimension that runs parallel to the real world and in which strange things can and do happen, but fortunately in Spares we're - well, spared - most of the nonsensical bollocks that accompanies the story's inevitable shift to this other realm. In fact, some of the stuff in Spares that could almost be viewed as filler to the plot and action sequences is actually quite impressive, and I'd be tempted to give this four stars if it wasn't for the fact that it was all a bit familiar. Where's the half star option when you need it? All in all, an enjoyable and quite addictive, but not brilliant, read.

pedrorufin
Pedro Rufin pedrorufin — Originally published in 1915, this title is part of a huge series written by naturalist Thornton Burgess. Targeted at early elementary children, they narrate the fanciful adventures of various woodland creatures. They are somewhat similiar to Avi's Poppy and Ereth's Birthday. I read these books as a child and am having great fun re-discovering them. They are popular with homeschooler groups, some of whom beleive nothing written after 1950 is any good. (Burgess died in 1964) Not great literature by any means, but they are fun to read and share with your kids.

aevtimov
александър евтимов-чучи aevtimov — I don't really understand the low ratings for this book, I really liked it. It wasn't amazing, not quite a five star read, but still it was interesting, and different. Ludania is ruled by a Queen, and the people are separated by class. Each class consisting of the servants, merchants, counsel, and royalty all speak their own language, and the universal language Englaise. Charlaina, or Charlie for short has always had the ability to understand any language. Only her family knows of this gift, and insists that no one know. When a superior class is speaking, the inferior must look down, refusing to do so would be an instant death sentence. The threat of war, of the new revolution is almost at the Capitol city where they live. All citizens are required to wear and present their passports at checkpoints throughout the city. While Charlie, and her bff Brooklyn attend one of the secret clubs she catches the eye of a man named Max. It's obvious that he is above her in class, but insists that she is intriguing, and would like to get to know her. Max speaks a language she has never heard before, and her understanding almost exposes her secret. As the fighting escalates, Charlie realizes that nothing, and no one are what she believed. *************************Spoilers/ Recap ************************ Everyone's secrets are later revealed, not only is Max a soldier, but the grandson of the Queen. Xander, the mysterious guy from the club, is also the leader of the Revolution, and Max's brother. Brook, her care free, flirtatious friend is a soldier for the Revolution, as was her mother. Last but not least, Charlie learns that she and her sister, Angelina are also Royalty and next in line for the throne. Their parents have kept their lineage a secret, because the Queen would have seen them as a threat and had them killed. All of the women of the royal line have powers, and Queen Sabhara has existed several lifetimes by sending her essence into the next heir, leaving her old body behind. It comes down to a face off at the palace, Charlie's parents have been held prisoner by the Queen and she won't release them unless Charlie agrees to allow the Queen to take over her body. Her parents insist she can't let that happen, even if that means their death. Charlie is strong at first and refuses, until her younger sister is used as the next pawn in Sabhara's game. Charlie accepts the Queens essence to save her younger sister, but while receiving the Queens memories, her language ability gives her the piece of the puzzle she needs. She learns from the memories that she can stop the Queen from taking over, if she hangs on long enough for the Queens body to die. Of course she does, and all is good in Charlies queendom, but what she hasn't told her friends, and family is that they essence of Sabhara is still living alongside of her own.
