Ana Lourenço anaclourenco — The most beautiful and stirring book I've read in recent memory. It's spare and sad, but also quite complex. This was my first introduction to Aimee Bender, and I expect I'll be adding her other works to my to-read shelf moments after completing this review. I'm grateful that Bender didn't waste any time trying to explain why Rose could taste emotions in food; I didn't care why. I just wanted to know how someone with that ability navigates through life without starving. Bender also put a realistic boundary around the demands on our suspension of disbelief. When Rose can start tasting emotions, she's only 9 -- not yet experienced or sophisticated enough to unpack all of the emotional flavors she crashes up against. She can sense feelings of hollowness and desperation and loneliness in food, but with a 9-year-old's still-developing understanding and powers of observation, isn't always able to comprehend what caused those feelings in the cook. The language was beautiful, the concept original, and Rose's ultimate self-discovery wholly satisfying. I enjoyed this book to such a degree that my review is doing an inadequate job of expressing my feelings, so I'll leave it at that.

Luis Gomes lumg — Great story. Had to suspend my disbelief a little in the beginning, but became hooked quickly. I'm not usually one for a sappy love story, and this is a huge love story, but I couldn't put this book down after the first few chapters. I guess the way that time unfolds made it easy to not get so wrapped up in the love story. Not surprisingly it was an incredibly sad ending, but left some hope that things continued. This is another one I liked so much I gave it as a gift.
